A Moment in the Sun

I had a little moment in the sun this past weekend. I was one of four presenters at the musical event, Uniting the Community Through Music, organized by Beth Shalom Temple Center in Green Valley, AZ. The first was the amazing Klezmerkaba, Tucson’s premier Klezmer ensemble. A big shout-out for those gorgeous scales and rhythms! Next was Amber Norgaard, the super-talented folk-rock Goddess who uplifted everyone with her sound and healing presence on stage. After the intermission, I was next. A little intimidating to say the least! Lol. Everybody else had a band with them. So there it was, just me in front of a big red curtain with a microphone in the very middle of the stage with 4 flutes. Reverb and Angels surrounding me, I started off with improvisation on my JP Gomez E flute. One of my go-to flutes. I played the kind of music I do when opening a labyrinth walk. I could’ve stayed there all day, but I had 20 minutes to play, so I moved on.
Next, another JP Gomez flute, my D, I played Walking in the Woods, one of the songs that has come through me since my days in New Hampshire. I love this song, though, and it’s the perfect flute to play the song on. Next, I played my Stephen DeRuby epic drone. It’s an experience to hear this flute. I played my song Communion. The rich, deep sound, supported by the drone's harmonies, is sublime. Finally, I played my Stephen DeRuby EZ Anasazi with Gratitude as my last song.
On stage, I imagined the entire audience and played with the intention of the music being a healing experience for them. Lots and lots of silence between phrases. Just blowing clouds, as Gary Stroutsos taught me.
After me, the Mariachi Aztlan band rocked the house with an impressive team of teen-aged musicians. Mind-blowing talent for such a young group of musicians. Truly professional!
A deep thank you to Beth. Shalom Temple Center, especially Mike Finkelstein, for having the vision to uplift the community through the uniting force of music.

We’ve been getting some wonderful rain finally, in fact, as is sung in the Native American folk song, “the river is flowing.” Took a walk with Keith at Tumacacori National Park through an enchanting mesquite grove down to the Santa Cruz River. Magical and peaceful.
