A page for all the Warrior Krav Maga students and the affiliate schools to share information, news, Self-defense and martial arts are not the same.
Learning how to fight is one slice of the self-defense pie. You also have to know how criminals select their victims, how to deescalate, situational awareness, tactical medicine, avoidance skills, and more. There are five criteria you need to be aware of when looking for adult martial arts training or adult self-defense classes.
1. THE INSTRUCTOR: Who is the instructor and what is their backgrou
nd. Too many Kravmaga instructors are karate instructors who do a four-day training course and become certified to teach krav ma ga. It's ludicrous. Most have never been in a real fight. At Krav Maga LKN the Chief Instructor, Nick Hughes, was actually in the military and taught hand-to-hand combat. He's the author of a bestselling book on self-defense, worked as a bodyguard to the rich and famous all over the world, and holds black belts in multiple arts. He's a subject matter expert, a featured instructor for Paladin Press, appeared on national TV, and voted one of the top 20 in his field by Black Belt magazine.
2. SOFT SKILLS: Soft skills of avoidance and awareness make up 75% of self-defense training. How do criminals select their victims? What we can do to not be selected? Situational awareness, verbal de-escalation, counter-surveillance, tactical medicine, and more. All these make up what are called soft skills.
3. HIGHEST PROBABILITY: Why do all Krav maga schools start with teaching you how to get out of a strangle? In witnessing, breaking up, and participating in over 2000 fights while working on nightclub doors I've never seen anyone get grabbed that way. Why do they waste your time teaching you something that's unlikely to ever occur? The number one hold in the world is a headlock for guys, and a hair grab for girls. We start there. Our job is to make you dangerous as fast as we can. That means teaching you to use the highest probability techniques and defenses against the highest probability attacks.
4. LEGAL RAMIFICATIONS: We have a saying at Warriors Krav Maga LKN. "You have two fights to win. The physical fight and the subsequent legal fight. It's not good winning the physical and then going to prison because you didn't understand the laws of self-defense. In a famous case amongst martial artists, a student of martial arts in NY city used his skills, unjustifiably, against a bouncer years ago. He's now doing life in prison because his instructor taught him how to fight but neglected the legal ramifications of the techniques he taught. Even if you win, lawsuits are expensive and you're still susceptible to being dragged back into court in a civil trial. Remember OJ?
5. MINDSET TRAINING: Everyone can teach techniques. The most important facet of adult self-defense is mindset, however. Ask your potential instructor how he trains that and get ready for the blank stare. At Warriors kravmaga LKN we use elements of NLP, hypnosis, and performance psychology to get you mentally prepared to deal with non-consensual violence. If your instructor isn't teaching that you could very easily freeze up when attacked for real!! At Krav Maga LKN we also have virtual online martial arts training. Check out www.WarriorsKravMagaOnline.com and get started in the comfort of your own home. So, in a nutshell, why train with us and not someone else? Your instructor is a world-renowned subject matter expert so everything you learn has been pressure tested by him in real fights and isn't theoretical. That means you won't do a dumb move that can't possibly work. You will learn the legal ramifications of every technique in class so you'll stay out of prison and avoid lawsuits. You will learn how criminals think and operate making it easier to avoid them in the first place. You'll do scenario-based training on verbal de-escalation so you can learn what to say, and more importantly, what NOT to say to get out of potential trouble. You'll get in the best shape of your life. You'll make friends, very possibly your best friend. Your blood pressure will probably drop, you'll lose weight, gain confidence, alleviate stress, and be better prepared in the eventuality of a criminal attack. Come check out our free introductory class held on the 2nd Saturday of every month.

One of the big differentiators from martial arts and self-defense is that we also teach our students tac-med.
Unlike MMA and BJJ tournaments, where there's a doctor in attendance, in the real world, you're on your own.
From a student yesterday.

Great video of a commando selection test in the Legion by an outsider invited in. He did well. Good section on the hand to hand combat training too.

What. This must be impossible. A karate instructor teaching grappling back in the seventies and eighties. Didn't the Gracies invent this stuff?
A cool clip by the inimitable Den Martin about my influence on security techniques by the UK bouncers back in the late eighties and nineties.
Den, along with 22SAS legend Lofty Wiseman, ran Europe's first bodyguard school, which I got to attend, first as a student and later as an instructor.
Den not only ran the school but also provided security for many VIPs, and I got to work with him on numerous gigs. One was for the VIPs of one of the major aircraft manufacturers during the Paris Airshow, and there were several others.
He was best mates with the legendary Marcus Wynne (who was also a student of Den's bodyguard course), a member of ASLET and IALEFI.
If you ever get a chance to train with him, you should. He has an incredible array of stories from over the years and is massively funny to boot.
Check the clip below.

My pic the other day, taken while looking after Pauly Shore, inspired some jealousy due to my rocking (no pun intended) a f***y pack. (Containing my first aid kit, flashlight, spare batteries, and maybe something I shouldn't have been carrying ;) )
Obviously, the question arises.

Cool. I spoke at a convention last year. Got voted the speaker they most wanted to have back and now have been asked to speak over two days this year.
