F-1 STUDENTS: THE NEW DURATION-OF-STATUS RULE IS ON HOLD

A federal judge in Massachusetts has issued a preliminary injunction, preventing DHS from implementing the new rule that was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026.

For now, the existing Duration of Status (D/S) framework remains in place for F-1 students.

But this is not a permanent cancellation.

The underlying legal case is still ongoing, which means the rules could change again as the litigation moves forward.

If you're an international student, don't make major travel or immigration decisions based on a headline alone. Review your individual situation and consult your school’s international office or an immigration attorney when needed.
