Florida teachers told to remove books from classroom libraries or risk felony prosecution. Thus comes on the heels of Fl. Gov. DeSantis removing College Board’s AP African-American History course from FL HSs. This is completely unacceptable! Who is protecting these teachers and disputing these blatantly racist and marginalizing laws?

TEACHING “BEYOND THE PRISON”
A PEDAGOGY WORKSHOP

Lunch will be provided for in-person participants.

As part of HISB’s ACLS-funded public humanities project, “Writing Beyond the Prison: Reimagining the Carceral Ecosystem with Incarcerated Authors,” this pedagogy workshop introduces the “Living Archive” of writings by incarcerated authors and their families that we are building at Stony Brook University.

Workshop participants will learn about the range of writings (poetry, fiction, autobiography, and essays) included in the “Living Archive”. They will learn how to access these writings for inclusion in spring courses and discuss how incorporating the voices of the incarcerated can energize teaching in multiple disciplines. We will share model assignments created by our team of Carceral Research and Teaching Fellows, supported by the Center for Changing Systems of Power:

They talk to us about food, clothing, and, shelter upon reentry, but never about the importance of love, learning to live with a family which has learned to live without us, or even more difficult, starting a family of our own after being taken away from society so young and even growing up in broken homes.

True reentry Includes healing as a practice, and as an necessity to reentry success.
