I woke up this morning and went to the shore instead of staying in bed.
I almost never see the sunrise from the house. The trees are too tall and that side of the property is the garage side, opposite the living quarters. So I took my coffee and walked down.
It was quiet and golden and a little misty. Every rock was glistening. The storm the night before had rolled in a whole new batch of stones. I prayed. I listened. I sat with myself and with my thoughts and I didn’t wrestle with them. I just sat.
This afternoon I took the dogs back down and found that the little stone garden I’d worked so hard on had been knocked over. A group of kids had come through.
My first feeling was frustration.
Then I thought about how much fun those kids probably had choosing rocks and knocking the whole thing down. Same stones. Different morning.
The shore doesn’t belong to any of us for long. The stacks are just a way of saying “I was here and I noticed.” Kids get to say it too, even if they say it by tipping the pile over.
I’ll stack them again. Or I won’t.

Hello from the shoreline. I’ve been off the grid since I left on this little soul-searching getaway last week.

I spent the whole day with the lake today. From the camper deck the waves sounded close enough to be under my feet; the rest of the time I was actually down on the cobbles — throwing the ball for R***r and Ellie, stacking stones into cairns and claiming my own little stretch of shoreline, a quiet pocket that already feels like my little heaven. Most of the rocks here are big cobbles, but when you start flipping them you find the small, special ones. For the first time I actually played with the stones instead of just collecting them. Usually when I come to the beach I’m on a clock, so I gather what I can and save the playing for later. Today I didn’t feel rushed. I just stayed and made things — matching curves and colors into little puzzles.

I felt a little guilty that the day didn’t look like work. Then I thought maybe this was just all those quiet little pauses I never quite made time for before. After years of pouring into little ones, I’m learning how to pour into myself too. This season of rest will be good for me. I want to keep sharing the journey so the connection doesn’t fade — especially with the children who used to fill my days. I already miss their faces and can’t wait to see them again.
