National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) just released their updated 2026 Educational Messaging Desk Reference! It is full of safety messages for fire and life safety educators. It includes a section on carbon monoxide. We encourage you to follow the link and download the PDF version to read fully.

Here is a brief excerpt:

*Chapter 3 Carbon Monoxide*
3.1 Dangers of Carbon Monoxide

3.1.1 Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas you cannot see, taste, or smell. It is often called “the invisible killer.” CO gas can be fatal to people and pets.

3.1.2 CO is created when wood and/or fossil fuels are burned incompletely. Examples of fossil fuels include kerosene, gasoline, coal, natural gas, propane, and methane.

3.1.3 CO poisoning can result from gas-, gasoline-, and diesel-fueled vehicles idling inside garages or from malfunctioning or improperly vented water heaters, clothes dryers, furnaces and other heating appliances, cooking appliances, and portable generators.

Last year, the 10th Annual CO Safety Summit was our largest event to date. NH Governor Ayotte opened the day with a speech emphasizing safety messages, experts and survivors from around the nation shared their knowledge and experiences, and WMUR ran a segment about the Heathco Foundation! It takes everyone working together to raise awareness and prevent carbon monoxide poisonings.

With all the momentum from last year's event, the team has been working all year to bring you an expanded program in 2026! Stay tuned for more details.

Registration opens soon!
