Welcome to my new page for my new reading tutor service Ms. Liz Reading Tutor! I'm going to post an "about me" paragraph or two here:

I’ve been tutoring phonics and comprehension for the last seven years. I'm enthusiastic about literacy, and about meeting students where they are in their journey toward literacy. I’ve had students who needed help with reading because their school district doesn't teach reading in a way that makes sense to them. I’ve also had students with dyslexia and with ADHD. I’ve approached each of these students as a unique individual. Each of them has been in a different place, and each needed tutoring tailored for them.

It’s clear to me that frequent short lessons are more effective than less frequent longer lessons. Therefore, I offer 30 minute lessons a minimum of three days a week. I work entirely online.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Oberlin College, as well as a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies from UC Berkeley. Both reflect my passion for reading, for learning, and for books!

Here’s a brief overview of my tutoring career: I worked independently as a phonics and reading tutor starting in August of 2016. Immediately before starting to tutor in 2016, I took an online class on the Reading Rockets website entitled “Reading 101.” While I tutored independently I continued to learn about teaching reading using study materials suggested by the Reading Rockets website. In 2019 I was trained by Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes in the use of their Seeing Stars curriculum and their Visualizing and Verbalizing curriculum. I used it through Lindamood-Bell from the beginning of 2020 to November of 2021. In 2022 I was trained by Ignite! Reading in the use of a curriculum entitled “How to Plan Differentiated Reading Instruction” written by Sharon WalpoIe, PhD and Michael C. McKenna, PhD. This curriculum is aligned with the science of reading. I used the curriculum through Ignite for the 22/23 school year.
