Fun times ahead with all the data at our fingertips!

We have been experimenting recently with the Witsee sensor. The amount of information that is given by the sensor is amazing! I threw it for roughly 25 shots and learned a lot about what I do well and what I seemingly do not do well.

From a base level, the app tells you your RPM, release speed, axis tilt, axis rotation, loft, loft angle, release height, swing height, and total bounce. Talk about information overload, especially if you are unable to decipher what all of it means!

What I learned during my session was that my rev rate is a bit higher than I anticipated, as I averaged around 480 and got it all the way up to 518. Release speed was pretty similar to what I expected, averaging a smidge above 18mph. Axis tilt was lower than I thought, as the sensor read me consistently 5-8 degrees. Something that I did not expect to be as enamored by was swing height and observing the correlation between that and release speed. It was fun to see what my swing naturally did when I was attempting to throw it slightly harder and slightly slower.

It will be exciting where sensors like Witsee and F5 go in the future and what date they can provide. Competition in this market will be great for consumers, as it could continue to push companies to evolve and provide more and more data. I am excited to see it from a pro shop and coaching perspective, and how the sensor can help us make informed decisions for our customers and create more value for our clients.

With all of the training tools available, the data given can be a bit overwhelming. It is important to connect with a qualified coach who can break down what the data is telling you and how to make informed conclusions. While the data can extremely beneficial, it also can be paralyzing if we become too focused on it. It will be awesome to see if a data set is created over time through the various apps to show what is equivalent to "pro level," "novice," etc. Specto has something like this that would be on the recap after a session which I always thought was really fun to review.

If you are interested in testing the sensor, reach out to us or Gray's Pro Shop to set up a time. If enough are interested, we may start a leaderboard to track who is the most consistent, who has the highest average rev rate, most consistent rev rate, etc.

League season is here!

Something that it took me a long time to understand is that most leagues have people who are there for all different reasons. Growing up, I generally thought that everybody showed up trying their hardest to win and that was the most important thing. I now understand that people often bowl leagues as a way to connect with friends and family, as well as a way to challenge themselves.

Of course, some leagues have their highly competitive teams, and some leagues have more of them than more recreational teams. Other leagues are more recreational in nature. It is difficult to find leagues that are completely one side or the other, as many people bowl on the day that is most convenient for them, without care of the competitiveness of the league.

One thing that can be understood is that all leagues have bowlers who want to improve in some way or form. If that was not the case, they would not get frustrated when something negative happens. As coaches, these bowlers can be potential clients, but it can be important to meet them where they are at. Maybe these bowlers need basic tips that can improve their scores by 5-10 pins on average just through verbal queues/ideas.

After subbing in league on Monday, I had a gentleman ask me some questions regarding consistently missing left. I gave him a couple ideas and things to consider, but it can be hard to properly diagnose a cause without a proper session where video can be taken and things can be watched.

This is your sign to reach out to your local coach to schedule an early season tune-up. Could also be good to also check in with your pro shop professional to see if your hand flexibly has changed, especially in the case of any pain.

If you are interested in scheduling a session with Jerracah or myself, do not hesitate to reach out. With the collegiate season in full swing our availability is a bit limited, but we can look at the calendar to see what we can line up!

Spent the week out at the Innovative Bowling Products Pro Shop Class. Had a ton of fun, learned a lot, and got to meet some great people.

Thank you to all of our instructors, specifically Hank, Alex, John, Mark, and Gary. Thank you to Innovative, Vise, and Storm for providing the products and materials. Lastly, thank you to Colony Park Lanes for hosting the bowling portion of the class. I am very appreciative of the opportunity to learn from such great people.

Get out there and learn about our sport whenever you get the opportunity!

USBC Open Championships have come and gone! We had spme really good food and Jerracah bowled well! I (Jordan) left a bit to be desired overall. Jerr shot 1948 AE (663, 676, 609) and I had 1856 AE (527 😢, 662, 667)

Take these notes with a grain of salt, as I have not bowled the Open Championship since 2023 when it was in Reno. Team event played pretty similarly to what I remember team playing like. Seems medium in length, moving in early can be a trap due to the lack of perceived length of the pattern. There is some merit to the idea of throwing plastic to attempt to stretch the pattern and create some hold. I believe the strategy should be determined by your team and companion team styles. If the team has a lot of rev rate, it could be more useful to prioritize the hold due to moving in being inevitable. For teams with a bit lower rev rate, it would be more beneficial to target the gutter and try to create hook out there.

Getting your ball to shape the right way is very important. I was unable to get my ball through the pins the right way, and worked through every ball in my bag during team event to no avail. At the end, the pocket seemed fairly accessible, but still could not get my ball to knock ten down consistently.

Doubles and singles play quite a bit tighter. Felt like there was plenty of hold, and it became most important to attempt to create some hook outside to have miss both directions. There were some high rev rate players who were able to throw surfaced urethane with good success, but it is hard telling the longevity of a look like that with six on a pair.

Balls utilized for me included a Turbo X NU, Evil Eye, Combat, Alert, and a Black Hammer 78D. Jerracah used her arsenal to perfection, utilizing the natural progression consistently provided by the pieces she elected to bring. She threw a Spartan, GB2, Outer Limits Black Hole, Crown Victory, and Alert. At some point she utilized all of them.

If you have any questions regarding balls utilized and lane play strategy, feel free to reach out! The time out there with friends and family made the trip great! It was fun to watch Jerr execute so well and beat me by almost 100.

There has been some discourse on social media about coaching and the level of complexity of the verbiage utilized. The conversation has been productive and there have been good points raised.

It is our duty, as coaches and educators, to attempt to tailor information to the audience. At some level, it can be difficult to get information to the player depending on their level and experience. Although there is difficulty, it should not alleviate us of the responsibility to be able to communicate effectively. If we do not have the ability to relate and express information effectively to all level of players, we shrink the impact we can make on the bowling community as a whole.

The discussion has continued in how things are explained and are we trending away from knowing how to actually knock pins down. There is a discussion to be had with players regarding the technicalities that are involved in the game, and it is important to note that some players can certainly get bogged down in them. Thinking about the perfect arsenal, perfect physical game, and perfect mental game can stunt growth along the way. There is no perfect in this sport that has some much gray area. Coaching players through this can be a difficult, especially with the abundance of information available online.

The beauty of this sport lives in the gray. There is no exact spare system, but there are guidelines. There is no perfect arsenal, but there are guidelines. Coaches should be training players how to navigate these guidelines and directing them to identify what is the correct option for them and WHY. The why is what separates good coaches and great coaches.

Explaining the why is what positions players to make adjustments on the fly. Additionally, it positions players to be able to explain things for other players, creating value for those around them. In a team environment, you cannot have too many players who understand the game at a high level. Education is paramount to a team's success.

There is a fine line between educating and instructing, and the best coaches in the world have been able to toe that line. This distinction can be the difference in "We should be considering this ball, can you tell me why?" versus "Throw this ball and stand here." Push players to think for themselves with gentle nudges in the desired direction.

Allowing players to fail in real time can be difficult due to the desire to win and succeed, but occasionally it can be necessary for the overall learning process. Players will learn the best from failure, if they allow themselves to view them as opportunities for growth. Failure is simply a piece of the puzzle. Reflection whenever failure occurs is necessary for growth.

With the summer being here, lessons have certainly started to be scheduled! If you would like to get together for a session, please reach out!

The end of the collegiate season brings a variety of emotions. Of course, we would love to be preparing for ITCs, but unfortunately, the end of the USBC season comes down to one event on one weekend to attempt to continue.

This situation provides a learning opportunity and also forces you to find perspective. Does bowling poorly one weekend make your season a failure? Does bowling well one weekend make your season a success? The answers to those questions very well may be different.

Team bowling, just like individual bowling, it is important to not let one weekend define your season. Individually, you can always find an event to go compete in the next weekend, where collegiately, your season/career may simply be done. For the returners, we are done competing till October.

Luckily for us, after our poor performance at Sectionals we were able to get right back on it and compete at NAIA Nationals the following week. NAIA Nationals led us to do some of our best bowling of the year, finishing second after coming in as the six seed.

I implore all players to not be afraid to jump back into competition after a less than perfect event. As bowlers go, it seems to be extremely difficult to build confidence, but exceptionally easy to have it fall apart. Do not allow your confidence to be evaporated after one poor event.

Develop a practice plan and get to work. If you struggled on one area in particular, zero in on how you will improve it. Maybe it is an area you have historically been good at, so you may just need to convince yourself that you can perform in that area.

The end of the collegiate season also opens up a lot of time to get sessions in. If you are interested in working with either of us, certainly reach out!
