Of course I was always overwhelmed: I was constantly zoomed all the way out… carrying all 5 chapters in my head and heart, all day, every day. I even dreamt about them.

But progress doesn’t happen at the level of the *whole* dissertation. It happens at the level of the *next step*.

I eventually learned that, but I carried far more stress than I needed to.

And that’s why I now teach dissertation writers how to break their work into defined, doable pieces - and set corresponding goals.

What’s your defined, doable *next thing* right now?

There’s the visible side of doctoral work, especially on the socials. Searching for articles, annotating, data analysis, drinking coffee and tea. 😊

And then there’s the invisible side. It’s so much larger. Like an iceberg. All of the hours spent alone with your thoughts and writing. The ways that thinking about your research can begin to occupy every moment of the day. The world can start to feel distant while you’re deep inside the work.

If this is your season, it’s not permanent. Depth can narrow things for a while, but not forever.

And you’re not alone. We’re hosting a Women’s Doctoral Writing Retreat on Zoom on Monday 2/16- a space to go deep without disappearing.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼... 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴?

And then find yourself in a gentle tug-of-war — part of you craving rest, and part of you whispering “you should be writing”?

I have some good news: If you're in slo-mo today (or any day) and still need or want to get some writing done — 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.

In truth, writing encourages us to slow our pace so we can connect with our thoughts. This unhurried pace isn’t a punishment — it’s a gift, especially on days when our bodies and minds crave softness.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲... 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀?
