Today, our students celebrated the birthday of Maria Montessori and learned more about the woman whose work transformed the way we think about childhood and education.

From our youngest learners to our Middle School, students throughout CMS explored timelines of her life, read about her work and accomplishments, discussed her ideas, and participated in the Montessori tradition of celebrating birthdays Around the Sun.

Maria Montessori was a physician, educator, and innovator who challenged traditional approaches to education by recognizing children as capable, curious, and deserving of environments that support their independence and development. Her work has influenced education around the world and continues to shape Montessori classrooms more than a century later.

Today was an opportunity for our students to learn about her life, her work, and the ideas that continue to guide their education every day. Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori! 🌞

A beautiful prepared environment doesn’t happen by accident; it takes thoughtful planning, skilled hands, and a lot of time. We are incredibly grateful to two very special members of our school community, Tom Spink and Tom Redwine, who recently put all three to work for our students and teachers.

As grandfathers of students here at CMS, they generously dedicated 120 hours to building 10 Lower Elementary shelves and 6 Toddler shelves for our classrooms. Their craftsmanship and care have already made such a meaningful difference, giving our teachers beautiful, functional spaces to organize materials and creating inviting, purposeful environments where children can learn and grow.

We are so thankful to both Toms for sharing their time, talents, and energy with our school. Their willingness to give back to the school their grandchildren call home is a wonderful example of the kind of community that makes CMS so special.

Behind every number is a person, a story, a family, a classroom, and a connection.

This year, our community includes 293 students and 66 staff members. Our families come from 45 ZIP codes, 25 countries, and 5 continents, with 11 languages spoken at home. And with 40% of our students receiving tuition support, we’re proud to be a community working to make Montessori accessible to more families.

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

Walk through our halls and you’ll see what they really mean: children with different backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and perspectives learning alongside one another. You’ll see curiosity, independence, collaboration, and connection.

That’s who we are. And as we begin a new school year, we’re so excited for what’s ahead. 💛🐝

After a VERY close race, we’re excited to officially announce that the…

BEE 🐝 will be the new mascot of Columbus Montessori School!

We know the Otter had plenty of love, too! Both options were incredibly popular, and we’re so grateful to everyone who voted and made this such a fun new tradition.

So, why a Bee? The connection to Montessori is pretty perfect. Bees are curious, collaborative, hardworking, and community-minded - working together while each playing an important role within the larger hive. Much like Montessori, where children are encouraged to explore independently, contribute to their community, and learn alongside one another.

And this is just the beginning! Bee hives are coming to our back field soon, giving our students even more opportunities to observe, explore, and learn from the natural world. We can’t wait to bring this hands-on experience into our Montessori education.

Welcome to the CMS family, Bee! 🐝💛

✨ What a wonderful first day of Gradual Entry!

Today, our classrooms were filled with new faces, familiar faces, curious minds, and lots of special moments as children and caregivers began easing into a new school year together.

Gradual Entry is such a meaningful part of the Montessori experience. It gives children the time and space to build comfort and confidence in their new environment while strengthening the partnership between home and school. We are so grateful to all of our caregivers who took the time to join us today and help make this transition so special.

As we get ready to welcome our students back this week, we’re excited to share a thoughtful reminder: school readiness is about so much more than school supplies and schedules.

It’s about helping children feel confident, connected, and a sense of belonging as they step into a new school year.

In our guest blog with Mollard Consulting, LLC, we share practical ways caregivers can help children prepare for the transition - from creating simple routines and talking through big feelings to building excitement for all that’s ahead.

We’re so grateful to Mollard Consulting for giving us the opportunity to share a Montessori perspective and helping us spread these important reminders to families!
