Early Interceptive Diagnosis, Growth Modification, and Practice Systems for General and Pediatric Dentists
COURSE OVERVIEW
Phase I orthodontic treatment is an early, problem focused approach performed during active growth to guide jaw development, improve dental relationships, normalize function, and address airway related concerns before problems become complex.
This form of treatment is typically delivered during the mixed dentition years, most commonly between ages 6 and 10. Treatment is targeted rather than comprehensive and focuses on correcting specific skeletal, dental, and functional problems at the most biologically favorable time. Treatment duration commonly ranges from six to twelve months.
When properly executed, Phase I treatment reduces the risk of future complications such as impacted canines, severe malocclusions, surgical orthodontic cases, and the need for premolar extractions. Early intervention can significantly simplify and shorten Phase II orthodontic treatment during adolescence.
Phase I therapy may include limited braces, maxillary expansion, Class III facemask therapy, and functional or habit appliances such as Herbst type devices. These modalities are used to manage excessive overjet, deep bites, open bites, crossbites, Class III skeletal discrepancies, oral habits, airway risk factors, sleep disordered breathing, and myofunctional imbalances.
A critical component of this course is early identification and management of eruptive disturbances. You will learn practical techniques to reduce the likelihood of maxillary canine impactions through space management, transverse development, eruption guidance, and proper timing of intervention.
This course teaches not only how to diagnose and treat Phase I cases, but also how to implement systems that allow Phase I and comprehensive Phase II orthodontics to be successfully integrated into a general dental or pediatric practice.
