REAM Ortho was featured in this summer. Our new publication in JAAOS Global demonstrates that frailty tools matter in stratifying risk in orthopaedic trauma.
A study of 206,000+ fracture patients compared two frailty tools:
*RAI-Rev (age, comorbidities, function, cognition)
*mFI-5 (5 comorbidities)
Findings:
✅ RAI-Rev predicted mortality, complications, and readmissions far better than mFI-5
⚠️ mFI-5 slightly outperformed RAI-Rev for wound issues
Takeaway: RAI-Rev may be the stronger tool for risk stratification in trauma surgery—helping surgeons anticipate outcomes and guide care.

REAM Ortho teams have successfully published in major journals this year, including the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.
“Recent and future trends in osteopathic orthopedic surgery residency match rates following the transition to a single accreditation system,”delves into the trends of increasing osteopathic applicants to orthopedic surgery residency programs that are met with a decreasing percentage of osteopathic students matching into orthopedic surgery residency programs since the ACGME merger. This work contributes to the ongoing discourse in the need for osteopathic representation in orthopedic surgery.

📄 🚨New REAM Research Alert: Impact of Tranexamic Acid in Joint Arthroplasty Procedures
A recent study by Manes TJ, Kelly BE, and Main C., published in *Cureus* (Dec 2024), investigated the use of oral and intravenous Tranexamic Acid (TXA) in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) and Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of TXA in reducing perioperative blood loss and improving patient outcomes during these common orthopedic procedures.
Key findings include:
- Both oral and IV TXA were associated with significant reduction in blood loss during TKA and THA.
- TXA’s role in minimizing transfusion rates enhances post-operative recovery and reduces complications.
This research provides valuable insights into optimizing perioperative care, offering a potential pathway to improve patient outcomes in joint replacement surgeries.

Congratulations to Hikmat Chmait and Aaditya Patel on their acceptances to present next month at this year's International Geriatric Fracture Society Annual Meeting.
Led by student members, members, and , these two studies explore important risk analysis indices for predicting postoperative delirium (POD), postoperative adverse outcomes, mortality, and readmission rates.
These indices can help optimize care and improve postsurgical outcomes. This research emphasizes the importance of tailored surgical planning to reduce risks for our older patients. Understanding these insights is crucial for advancing patient care and treatment outcomes in orthopedic surgery. Excellent work!!
