For Rachel Lapidus

For Rachel Lapidus On July 27th, 2011 Rachel went into Cardiac Arrest. We were told Rachel would never walk or talk again. Look at her now! This all changed on July 27th 2011.

Rachel was a perfectly healthy 19 year old girl. She had graduated high school and was in college full time plus working a full time job. She had a boyfriend and drove a nice little yellow convertible. Rachel has always been a loving person growing up. Especially to her little brother who she always had an awesome bond with. She loves people, she loves animals, and would go out of her way to try t

o help who ever and where ever she could. Rachel had dreams of being a Special Education teacher and all this was taken away one July night. While in the middle of a heated argument with her cousin Rachel all of a sudden stiffened up and dropped. her heart just stopped. We performed CPR within 4 minutes of the incident but Rachel's heart did not start up for almost 9 minutes. Because of this Rachel is suffering from an Anoxic Brain Injury (Lack of Oxygen). When this first happened we were told there was no chance for quality of life because she was down too long. As parents, you would not want to hear something like that about your child. So we fought for her survival with her. We pushed for rehab and after almost a week of arguing with the doctors and Insurance companies finally, Rachel was moved to Rehab Hospitals of Indiana. This approval from the Insurance company was for 3 days. 72 days later Rachel walked out of that rehab and her recovery still continues today. Rachel is a miracle and continues to amaze the doctors who we are all trying to prove wrong. Rachel now has an amazing opportunity ahead of her. Rachel qualifies for HBOT Therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment. After the phone consult we were told that RACHEL IS TREATABLE! Her cognitive problems, speech problems, even some of the physical problems are all treatable with HBOT

As parents, after what we have been through to hear those words and would again do ANYTHING we can to make this happen so we are asking for you to help be the miracle for Rachel Lapidus. She spent 10 days on full life support and 72 days in intensive inpatient rehab at Rehab Hospital of Indianapolis. She now faces years of outpatient rehab to regain basic self-care skills. Rachel's parents, Randy and Robin Lapidus, have been working very hard with Rachel and their efforts are paying off. Even though Rachel has a long way to go, her recovery so far has been miraculous. Help support the Lapidus family in their time of need. You can donate by going to www.gofundme.com/MiracleForRachel

Rachel was ready for the farmers market this morning. She was hoping to see lots friends walking around the market.
She did see several friends and enjoyed chatting with everyone. After the market Rachel and nI headed home and Randy took the truck out to the race track We went on our grocery shopping trip that we usually do on Sunday. That confused Rachel a little and I had to explain to her 3 or 4 times that tomorrow Dad has a car show to go to and we have a birthday party and a community event at the park so that's why we switched things up. Rachel was a big help around the house this evening. She helped with laundry and made sure all the animals were fed. When she headed off to bed she told me she's done with laundry for the weekend and grumbled when I told her she still has some in the dryer that we will put away tomorrow.

Rachel had a pretty quiet day at REACH. She didn't want to go on the outings today because they did not interest her. She did say she went on an errand to Walmart with one of the staff. I surprised REACH today and picked Rachel up in the ice cream truck a little early, so they all came out and got cones. Once we got home Rachel asked if it qas OK if she stayed home this evening while I went to a little school carnival. She and Dad relaxed at home and decided on supper. Rachel getting some sleep and is ready for the farmers market tomorrow.

Just a short note tonight...

Rachel had a fun but tiring day.
She loves hanging out at the food truck festival, especially at lunchtime when her friends from REACH come down. She knows her way around the festival and this evening as she walked around checking everything out, she came back and asked if we could share some Zucchini sticks. I asked her if she knew how much they were and she said she did because she read the menu. I gave her the money and she successfully went down to that food truck and ordered by herself. This truck wasn't a local that knows Rachel well so I was impressed that she was able to do that with no difficulty. Rachel is out like a light, getting rested up for a day at REACH, and a school carnival tomorrow evening.

Rachel was moving a little slow when she first got up this morning. Thankfully she had gotten everything ready last night so once she had breakfast she moved a little quicker and we were out the door in plenty of time. Cami had to be dropped off at the groomer so she took a ride to REACH this morning. We had to end up rolling the windows down which Rachel was not pleased about. If you know bulldogs, you know why the windows were down. Rachel did have to show Cami off to a couple of staff before she went in, and if course, they gave her pets, which she loved. Ad picked Rachel up for her appointment today, which went well. The podiatrist said everything looks good and she doesn't have to return unless she has other problems. Rachel's heel is pretty tender so she relaxed and watched movies this afternoon. She's ready for tomorrow's food truck festival and called it a night shortly after supper tonight. She told me when she went to bed she's going to hang out with her friends during lunch time but will help me tomorrow evening if it gets busy.

Rachel was excited this morning about going to the state fair. She didn't drag her feet at all this morning and was ready to go with plenty of time to spare.
Dad picked her up this evening while I finished my route. Randy said that when he asked her about her day, she told him she had a tenderloin and bought a shirt, and she was tired. When they got home, she promptly went to her room to take a nap. When I came in, she was waiting to tell me about her day. She said she didn't see any animals, and that was disappointing. She didn't eat a lot, so she could have some goodies at the food truck festival later this week. She said one time was enough for ger because there was a lit of people and a lot of walking. At least she got to experience the state fair. When she went to bed, she was out in no time. I'm sure she will be up early tomorrow, she's a little nervous about her follow up with the podiatrist tomorrow.

Rachel had a good day at REACH. She said they went for a walk this afternoon and her socks got wet, so they gave her a dry pair. I assumed she had stepped in a mud puddle and we went on out afternoon. As we drive around in the ice cream truck Rachel started talking about her socks. She then went into detail about a situation that had arose at REACH, and that they had to go outside for a little bit and she didn't have her shoes on. She said everything was OK and she was able to get some dry socks. She then reminded me her wet ones were in her lunch box. I really hope they are in the washer now. Rachel is excited about going to the state fair tomorrow and is looking forward to $2 Tuesday.

Rachel was up very early for a Sunday today. Of course she was asking what time Pet Supply Plus opened because she was really wanting to replace her fish and get another snail. She was up and dressed by 8 and ready to go for breakfast. After breakfast Rachel and I ran to Walmart for a few things then it was off to the pet store. Rachel took her time looking at every kind of fish they had. She finally picked out 2 Mickey Mouse fish and an orange snail. We now have Mickey and Minnie the blue and orange fish and Gary and Blossom the snails. Rachel said we need to try and get pictures of them tomorrow. Rachel is looking forward to REACH this week, as well as the food truck festival on Thursday. She is already talking about which truck she want to try for lunch. Rachel called it a night a little early tonight so I'm sure she will be well rested in the morning.

Short and sweet...

Rachel started grumbling this morning because she wasn't ready to get up.
She did get in a better mood once we got moving and down to the Farmers market. Rachel enjoyed people watching and delivering her weekly milkshake to another vendor. This afternoon Rachel and I ran our Saturday route. Rachel kept her eyes peeled for people flagging us down. She chatted with those she has known for years, and even struck up conversations with new customers. We were supposed to set up for the outdoor movie tonight, but the threat of rain moved it inside, so when we finished our route we headed home. Rachel helped me clean out the truck, then she and I went to grab a bite to eat and grab Dad something for when he got home from his event. Rachel called it a night shortly after we came home. I'm sure she will sleep in a little tomorrow, she said she was pretty tired.

When Rachel got up this morning she to her dish tank and said, "Get the net the fish is belly up! Ill flush this one.." And now on our to do list for Sunday is get another fish. Thank goodness they arent expensive. Rachel enjoyed her day at REACH today. She did say she decided not to go bowling this afternoon though.
This evening we planned out our day for tomorrow. Rachel is looking forward to getting back.on our routes now that the rain and flood warnings are 9ver. We have a busy day tomorrow and Rachel said she's going to get a good night's sleep. She said she's going to be busy delivering milk shakes tomorrow at the Farmers market.

Rachel did not have a good night last night and was up and down all night long with a bad stomach. Needless to say she did not go to REACH today.
We let her sleep and finally made her get up to try and eat a little something around 11:30. She had something light, drank some Gatorade then wanted to lay in bed and watch movies. I know she doesn't feel well when she tells us she doesn't want to go anywhere today. I asked her on and off all day if she wanted anything to eat and finally got her to eat a chicken sandwich about 6. Thankfully her stomach seems to be much better and she said she's feeling better tonight. Hopefully Rachel will get a better night's sleep tonight and will be back to herself tomorrow.
