High school students who performed welding engineering and advanced manufacturing research as part of summer internship programs with the Manufacturing and Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC) and NSF Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution (HAMMER) Engineering Research Center added new skills to their portfolio and a fresh perspective on their future.

From hands-on research with graduate students and faculty to seeing the impact of their work in a manufacturing setting, the experience exposed young scholars to unique engineering fields and promising careers in manufacturing.

Support from National Science Foundation (NSF), American Welding Society, and American Honda Motor Company, Inc. made these opportunities possible.

A team of welding engineering students, scientists and faculty at The Ohio State University captured their hot-wire laser welding at 24,000 frames per second. The high-speed camera allowed them to study transfer variations and behavior within an aluminum overlap joint used in battery trays.

Camera operators: Kaue Riffel, John Cicenas;
Project leads: Professor Boyd Panton, Paul Blackhurst
