A South Side school with 60+ years of history may soon close its doors ➡️

Buckeye Junior High opened on Columbus’ far south side in the 1963-64 school year as the 21st junior high school in the district, built to serve 700 students.

It was also a community hub: basketball leagues played in the gym, civic groups held meetings, and politicians made regular campaign stops there.

Now known as Buckeye Middle School, it serves about 340 students in what may be the school’s final year.

In December 2024, the Columbus City Schools board voted to close Buckeye, along with several other buildings. Bradleigh, Moler, and West Broad Elementary schools; the McGuffey Facility (Columbus Alternative); and a CCS administration building are all likely to close after the 2025-26 school year.

Do you know a Buckeye alum? Enjoy a trip down memory lane with yearbooks from the school’s early years, digitized in our collection. We’re always looking for more – visit the History tab on our website to browse or get in touch.
