Still looking for a summer elective?
Explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence in art and design. This studio examines both generative design methods and how generative media is transforming visual culture, redefining authorship and authenticity in an era of synthetic images. Enter the logic of generative systems and work from the inside out. Push their boundaries, redirect their outputs, and treat AI as a creative material. Through iterative experimentation and critical inquiry, you will develop projects that are visually ambitious and conceptually rigorous. Working with tools such as Stable Diffusion, ControlNet, Gemini, and platforms like Runway or Comfy, you will experiment directly with contemporary generative systems and explore their creative possibilities.
No prior AI experience is required, though basic digital literacy is essential, and experience in design or media production is helpful.

Congratulations to Ohio State Design alum Joshua Fry (MFA Design, 2010, DAIM), who has been recognized with a 2026 Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Environment in an Animated Feature.
Fry shares the honor with collaborators Limei Z. Hshieh, Alexander Nicholas Whang, and Ryan DeYoung for their work on Zootopia 2: Marsh Market—an award celebrating exceptional achievement in environmental design and world‑building for animation.
The VES Awards are among the most respected honors in the visual effects industry, recognizing teams whose work advances both the technical and creative potential of film and animation. Fry’s career reflects the kind of interdisciplinary practice and collaborative leadership fostered through Ohio State’s Department of Design, particularly the DAIM program’s emphasis on systems thinking and integrated media.
This recognition highlights the impact Buckeye designers continue to make across the creative industries, contributing to projects seen by global audiences while shaping the future of visual storytelling.

Congratulations to Thomas Yurkin (BSID ’85), 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient!
The Ohio State University Department of Design is proud to recognize Thomas Yurkin, Senior Creative Director at Freeman Company, as the recipient of our 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award, presented during the Spring Exhibition Reception.
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Tom has helped shape the field of experiential and exhibition design—leading the creation of immersive brand experiences that bring people, stories, and ideas together at scale. His work bridges visual communication, industrial design, and live events, guiding projects from concept through ex*****on while keeping the human experience at the center.
As part of his visit to campus, Tom engaged directly with our community: delivering a guest lecture to Visual Communication Design students, joining Collab Studio for a Q+A, and recording an episode of our Thinking Through Design podcast. Across each setting, he shared insights on collaboration, creative leadership, and the evolving role of designers in live, experiential spaces.
We’re honored to celebrate Tom’s achievements and his continued commitment to mentoring the next generation of designers.
