New Licensing Age:
Effective July 1, 2026 Governor Braun recently signed House Bill 1200 into law, drivers education students can now obtain your license at 16 years of age (previously 16 years and 90 days), provided you have successfully completed an approved driver education course and met all other BMV requirements:

• 30 hours of classroom/online theory.
• 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
• 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 night hours).
• Passing the Road Skills Test.

Eligibility Date:
Based on the July 1, 2026, effective date, here is how to calculate your arrival at the licensing finish line:
• Born April 1, 2010, or earlier: no change to your current eligibility date.
• Born between April 2 and June 30, 2010: You will be eligible to obtain your license on July 1, 2026 (provided you have held your permit for the required 180 days and have met all BMV requirements)

• Born July 1, 2010, or later: You will be able to receive your license on your 16th birthday (as long as you have held your permit for at least 180 days and have met all BMV requirements).

NEVER FORGET

This afternoon, I followed a vehicle on I-65 Southbound from Indianapolis for 20+ miles.
The vehicle stayed in the left passing lane the entire time I was following. Multiple vehicles were lined up behind the driver, which was causing a serious traffic backup.

I assisted the driver in allowing traffic to flow smoothly by pulling her over and informing her of the law.

Indiana law says, “a person who knows, or should reasonably know, that another vehicle is overtaking from the rear the vehicle that the person is operating may not continue to operate the vehicle in the left most lane.”

Please remember, drive in the right lane, pass in the left.
