Last week someone asked me, "Why don't more women enter skilled trades?" My answer? "20% of our last class were women."
The industry average is 2%.
Last night I was checking out the agenda for a conference I'm attending soon.
There is a five-hour workshop dedicated to ensuring a diverse and equal workforce.
For years, our enrollments have been at least 50% people of color. Many of those grads are now in leadership positions.
What secret has ADTC and its partners discovered that so many others have not?
It's really...really simple. You meet people where they are and provide opportunities. You remove barriers. You provide basic training or you outsource it. I'm talking weeks, not days. You invest.
Because if you expect trained candidates to show up at your front door, resume in hand, it's going to be a long....long wait.

She was a hairstylist. She's amazing.
Back to last night. An article from "The Economist" hit my inbox.
Its title - "Welcome to the Golden Age for Workers."
The article goes on to say that the rich world faces a dearth of workers. That manual labor, hard to replace with technology is scarce and becoming better rewarded. That since 2020, 38% of wage inequality since 1983 has been undone.
The people are there. The opportunities are there. What is not present is the structure. So, you (we) as employers must do it. In some vocations, there is no other choice.
Holly's boyfriend attended the graduation. He attends a very solid 2 year diesel mechanic program in a major city. Very nice young man. Already has a job with Cat.
So, I asked him "how many other people in total are in your class?"
His answer? SIX
