Shae needs a power lift van, organized by Kristin Whiting 12/27/2022

I am trying to raise money to get an older used van for my family member Shae. She had an unexpected severe anoxic brain injury on June 17, 2022 and wasn’t expected to live. She had multiple strokes in her brain and spent 10 weeks in a coma. Miraculously she awoke and is now in a skilled nursing facility learning to do everything over again. She is expected to make a full recovery but it might take years. I was able to bring her home for a Christmas in my car but it was very difficult and not very safe. She will probably get an electric wheelchair eventually so will need a wheelchair with a lift. We also need it so she can get to appointments in which Medicaid transportation won’t cover. Consider donating even $10 and share this post.

Thank you.

I started teaching in 1992 in a district in Southern Ohio. It doesn’t seem that long ago for me, but it was almost 30 years ago. In that time I have seen a lot of POSITIVE CHANGE that unions have brought for teachers. In 1992 the following was common, not just in southern Ohio, but in other places as well. $17,800 a year. I brought home $475 every 2 weeks! So I also worked almost every weekend and all Summer. My rent was $350 a month so prices were cheaper but my student loan payment was $286 per month.

First, there was a “morality clause” in my contract. Enough said about that…..
We had a “dress code.” I wore dresses and dress shoes (usually heels) every day to teach Special Ed (MD).
I had to turn my lesson plans into the office by the end of day on Thursday for the following week. (paper copy) I also had to always have the originals out on my desk.
I had students ages 5-14 in my classroom.
My “duty day” was 7:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. - One hour longer than we have now.
I had 1.5 HOURS of duty per day - and didn’t get paid extra.
Breakfast - 30 minutes
3 fifteen minute recesses - 75 minutes
“Car People” - 15 minutes.
EVERY Monday morning we had staff meeting at 7:00 a.m. and if anyone was late the principal yelled at us.
I had to personally call the principal if I was sick. No SEMS. I had to explain why and I just dreaded it!
We didn’t get any professional development days or IEP days at all.
There was only one records day - the last day of the year.
We didn’t get any days to set up our classrooms. If we were lucky our principal let us out one hour early on the first day of staff meetings.
We were expected to come to every school event (Elementary). Fundraisers. PTO every month. Open House. Conferences. All of it.
We got NO money to spend in our classrooms. And I mean NONE.
We got one package of paper to use per week. That was for “dittos” and the copy machine.
There was no PAR, so you either were given and contract, or not given a contract.
We were told that only “ineffective teachers” send kids to the office. There was no such thing as PEAK. Actually, I think PEAK is mostly a Columbus thing.
I was an MD teacher I had a student with a feeding tube. One that needed to be catheterized daily. And more that I can’t remember. I was expected to do those jobs. No nurse.
MD teachers didn’t get a lunch. Being with my class all day was just (part of the job).
I also got no planning time. My students had specials but I had to go with them.
At the first school I taught in we had to bring our own soap and toilet paper!! Because if the staff used our allotment for the week, it wasn’t replaced!!!

I welcome anyone to share some of the fabulous things you have learned and created this school year. I made a set of 87 Google Slides on Halloween and Harvest and I am very proud of them. After remote teaching, I plan to integrate more developmentally appropriate technology into my classroom. If nothing else, it was the impetus that brought many of us into the 21st century.

I posted my first BOOM cards and they are free. I am trying to do easy toddler, 3s, 4s and Special Education cards because those seem to be the most difficult to find. The link is in the comments.
