📞 Your firewall can’t stop a phone call.

Accounting and tax professionals have spent years learning how to recognize phishing emails—but cybercriminals are changing tactics.

Vishing (voice phishing) uses phone calls, urgency, impersonation, and increasingly AI-cloned voices to convince someone to transfer funds, disclose client information, reset credentials, or grant access.

And when the caller sounds exactly like a partner, colleague, or longtime client, “I know their voice” is no longer enough.

A few safeguards firms should consider:

🔐 Establish a verbal authentication or independent callback process for sensitive requests.

🚩 Train staff to treat unexpected urgency—especially “I need this done right now”—as a reason to verify, not rush.

📞 Add simulated vishing calls to your firm's security training and tabletop exercises.

Most importantly, create a culture where stopping to verify is expected. A 30-second callback could prevent a very expensive mistake.

One of the most valuable benefits of MSATP membership isn’t something you can put a price tag on — it’s access to your peers.

Every month, MSATP members come together through our members-only Discussion Groups & Think Tanks to have candid conversations about what’s happening in their practices.

Tax law changes. Difficult client situations. Pricing. Staffing. Technology. Practice management. Growth. Sometimes you just need to ask, “How are you handling this?” and hear from professionals who understand exactly what you’re dealing with.

These groups are collaborative, practical, and non-competitive. Bring a question, share an experience, help a peer, or simply listen and learn.

September groups include:

• Business Builders Think Tank: Emerging Practices
• Business Builders Think Tank for Bookkeepers
• Business Builders Think Tank: Eastern Shore
• Business Builders Think Tank: Frederick County
• Business Builders Think Tank: Montgomery County
• Maryland Tax Practitioners Discussion Group

Best of all, these monthly peer groups are FREE for MSATP members.

Find the group that fits your practice and register for an upcoming discussion:

☕ Coffee, conversations, and community — exactly what yesterday was all about.

MSATP’s Coffee & Conversations brought professionals together over breakfast and real, honest peer-to-peer discussion about the things happening in our practices right now.

We talked technology. We talked pricing. We talked about knowing when it’s time to fire a client. And, of course, we made time to network — because who doesn’t love a referral from a trusted peer?

There’s something different about being in a room with people who understand the challenges, opportunities, and decisions that come with this profession. Sometimes the best resource isn’t another webinar or article — it’s the person sitting across the table who has been there before.

That’s the community we’re continuing to build at MSATP: a place to learn from one another, share what’s working, make connections, and grow together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday! We’re already looking forward to the next Coffee & Conversations. ☕️

🚨 Maryland’s Digital Advertising Tax Has Been Struck Down

Maryland’s first-in-the-nation Digital Advertising Gross Revenues Tax has been struck down by the Maryland Tax Court, which found that the tax conflicts with the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act.

The court determined that Maryland’s law improperly singled out digital advertising for taxation while comparable non-digital advertising remained untaxed.

And this isn’t just a Maryland issue.

Illinois, Utah, and Washington have enacted their own digital advertising-related taxes, while at least a dozen states have explored similar approaches. Maryland’s ruling could have significant implications for what happens next across the country.

For Maryland tax professionals, this is one to keep on the radar—especially if you advise clients in technology, media, advertising, or digital marketing.

The state is expected to appeal, so the story isn’t over yet.

MSATP will continue watching the developments and what they could mean for Maryland taxpayers and practitioners.
