According to NAEP, only about 30% of 8th graders are reading proficiently.

We're having conversations about workforce shortages while ignoring where the workforce actually begins.

If we want stronger leaders, better communicators, and more adaptable talent, we have to start investing earlier.

Everybody is talking about workforce development.
Career readiness. Job pathways. Industry certifications. Future careers.
But make this make sense.
We know millions of children are not reading at grade level by fourth grade, yet many workforce development conversations do not begin until seventh grade, eighth grade, or even high school.
How are we preparing students for careers when many are still struggling with the foundation that every career requires?
Reading.
Communication.
Critical thinking.
Confidence.
Leadership.
In reality, workforce development does not start when a student chooses a career path.
It starts when a child learns to solve problems.
It starts when they learn to communicate their ideas.
It starts when they learn responsibility, empathy, resilience, and how to work with others.
If we wait until middle school to introduce these concepts, we are already playing catch-up.
The truth is that many kids today are being shaped more by Fortnite, Roblox, YouTube, TikTok, and Call of Duty than by intentional conversations about values, principles, leadership, and purpose.
This is not an attack on technology or gaming.
It's a reminder that if we don't actively help children build character, leadership, and literacy, something else will fill that space.
Every child is learning from something.
The question is: What is teaching them?
What if workforce development started in elementary school?
What if leadership came before job titles?
What if literacy was viewed as workforce infrastructure?
What if we spent as much time building character as we do building career pathways?
The future workforce is sitting in today's elementary classrooms.
And the habits they build now will determine far more than the jobs they hold later.
Our actions today determine our futures tomorrow.
That's why the conversation has to start earlier. Much earlier.
Because leadership starts long before adulthood.

We're excited to share that the Craig Buchanan II Scholarship Fund has now received support for 6 Future Leaders through Future Leaders Academy.

Our goal is to provide scholarship opportunities for 100 students during our first year, helping them build literacy, leadership, confidence, character, and future-ready skills through the Leader-Acy experience.

Every scholarship represents more than financial support.

It represents a Future Leader receiving an opportunity to learn, grow, and lead.

📖 When children read for interest and enjoyment, they’ll read more and be more engaged in reading. More time reading leads to increased confidence and reading skill!

💖 Giving children choice in what they read is a great way to boost motivation, but many children need some help to discover the books they truly love.

Today, Future Leaders Academy is honored to announce the creation of the "Craig Buchanan II Scholarship Fund."

Craig Allen Buchanan II believed in people.

He believed in encouraging others, lifting others up, and showing up fully for life.

He was an artist, an educator, a father, a mentor, and a friend. He spent nearly a decade helping shape young lives as a preschool teacher, creating experiences that children would remember long after they left his classroom.

What makes Craig's story so powerful is that he understood what it meant to overcome challenges.

He faced learning obstacles and speech delays as a child. He refused to let those obstacles define him.

Instead, he became an award-winning artist, a respected educator, a leader in his community, and someone who inspired countless people simply by being himself.

Craig believed in growth.

He believed in perseverance.

He believed in encouraging people to keep going, even when life got hard.

He loved the kids!

Those values align perfectly with what we are building at Future Leaders Academy.

The Craig Buchanan II Scholarship Fund was established to help remove barriers for students and families so more young people can access opportunities to learn, grow, lead, and discover their potential.

This fund is more than a scholarship.

It is a commitment to carrying Craig's legacy forward through the lives of future generations.

We are especially honored that the logo representing this scholarship fund was selected by Craig's son, Craig III, ensuring that his father's impact continues through the people who loved him most.

Craig's story did not end on October 3, 2025.

It lives on through the children he inspired.

The family he loved.

The community he served.

And now, through every future leader this scholarship helps support.
