Butterfield Youth Services, founded over 50 years ago in Marshall, Missouri, by Tom Butterfield, started with a remarkable act of compassion.
At 19, Tom became Missouri’s youngest and first single male foster parent, gaining custody of a six-year-old boy placed in a mental institution after losing his parents in a car accident.
His courage and vision inspired the community to create an organization that has since served thousands of children. Today, with 100 employees, Butterfield Youth Services supports children with emotional and behavioral disorders in West Central Missouri.
Notable projects, including campus design and site planning by Nick Peckham of Peckham & Wright Architects, ensure a nurturing environment for these children.

North Light Building, Downtown Columbia Missouri.
The mixed-use North Light Building includes ground-floor commercial storefronts and 12 spaces usable as apartments or offices.
The steel-framed brick building is LEED Certified and received an AIA Mid-Missouri Design Award.
The six live/work spaces on the west side are served by a coded elevator on Walnut Street that opens directly into tenants’ living rooms.
To prevent unneeded construction and reserve square footage for tenants, the spaces on the east utilize the city’s parking garage stairs and elevator. Each level has adjacent parking spaces.

Sustainability Spotlight!
There is a sculptural beauty to the spaces that we don't see in our finished homes. In this case the geometry of fabricated trusses creates an exceptionally strong roof structure. Employing wood trusses promotes sustainability by utilizing a renewable resource, with potential savings of up to 30% in construction time and 60% in material costs compared to traditional stick framing methods.
