Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15. The Hispanic community is one of the largest cultural groups represented in America's population, which is proven by our country's second-most used language: Spanish. Hispanics have a profound impact on American history, culture, and advancement.

Despite their large population size, however, Hispanics make up only 8% of STEM workers. While they have seen an increase of Hispanic STEM graduates, they are still heavily underrepresented in these fields. We at THRIVE will work to increase this number at Mizzou, creating more inclusive environments and welcoming communities for all.

Today, we honor those who tragically passed in the events of 9/11. We remember the bravery of our first responders, and we thank them for their courage and strength. The events that transpired on 9/11/2001 are a devastating mark on our country's history, and we keep in our hearts the loved ones of those whose lives were lost 23 years ago. Never forget.

About 720,000 people lose their lives to su***de each year, with su***de being the third leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds.

September is Su***de Prevention Month and today, September 10th, is World Su***de Prevention Day. This month (and all year), it is important to break the stigma surrounding mental health and su***de, and provide support to those who need it. Reach out to the people you love, listen without judgement, and provide support. You never know how much a small act of kindness can go.

Make sure to encourage those who need it to seek help. Mizzou is committed to fostering wellbeing on our campus, and the Mizzou Counseling Services are open to any and all Mizzou students free of charge.

Together, we can work to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and su***de and bring our community together with love and support.
