Coaches, check out Successteam in Aiken, SC, doing Floor is Lava with designed constraints: the leader was blindfolded, and only certain teammates could give directions. It forced the team to communicate with intention, as they had a figurative hand tied behind their backs. One team also had more players, but more were blindfolded and constrained. One team had fewer players, with one blindfolded. We had fun today.

When you draw up a play, it shouldn’t be just something you draw on a whiteboard. Treat it as a system that changes based on the players, the environment, the opponent, and what the game is teaching you.

Student Agency can be a big part of a classroom experience. Player Agency can do the same thing in sports, too. Oregon football coach Dan Lanning experimented with letting his players coach a practice. This can help bring a team together while building understanding from a football level.
