Jayasree Nath is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri, working under the mentorship of Dr. Ramji Kumar Bhandari. Her research focuses on the epigenetic regulation of gene-environment interactions in somatic cells of the male reproductive system. Jaya’s passion for epigenetics was sparked during her earlier work in environmental science, where she investigated the biological effects of microplastic bioaccumulation. This experience led her to explore how environmental toxicants can influence gene expression without altering the genetic code, ultimately steering her toward the field of environmental epigenetics. She is deeply committed to applying her scientific expertise to address male reproductive health challenges driven by environmental exposures.

Jaya has been an active member of ACES since 2024 and currently serves as the Social Director. In this role, she aims to strengthen her leadership and networking skills while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for her peers and the broader STEM community.

Why ACES?
I joined ACES to gain exposure to various STEM career opportunities, engage with a community of driven peers, and enhance my professional and leadership skills through active involvement.

Get to Know ACES and be Involved Today!!!!!!

Our highlight of the week is Laurie Agosto, currently treasurer for ACES. Big Shoutout to Laurie for her remarkable leadership and contributions.

Laurie Agosto is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri, working under the guidance of Dr. Pam Brown. Laurie's research background encompasses various areas. At the USDA at North Dakota State University, she focused on studying the growth and development of solitary bees. Later, at UCF, she employed bioinformatics techniques to identify pathogens affecting commercial beer in retail settings.

Currently, Laurie's research revolves around Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a gram-negative soil bacterium known for inducing tumors in plant fruiting. She serves as the president of the local SACNAS chapter at MU and holds the position of treasurer in the student organization ACES: Alternative Careers Exploring the Sciences. Laurie also engages in outreach events and is a speaker for Science on Wheels, an organization that brings scientific knowledge to rural Missouri residents.

Time for an ACES Member Spotlight!
Here's an interesting story about a driven and passionate scientist making waves in both research and leadership roles:
Caitlyn has been part of the ACES team since the fall of 2020 where she has worked through the ranks as a committee member, Historian, President, and now Graduate Student Advisor. She is a 5th year PhD Candidate in the Molecular Pathogenesis and Therapeutics (MPT) program where she studies the adaptive immune system and cancer immunotherapies. Caitlyn hopes to continue pushing boundaries in the development of immunotherapies in either industry or government throughout her career.
Her favorite part about being involved in ACES is the team building activities and the networking opportunities. The ACES team frequently participates in team building and social events that provide an opportunity for students to network and form relationships with students in other programs and disciplines!

Time for another ACES Executive Committee member introduction!!!!!
An amazing story of Anjana Giri (she/her), our brilliant Historian and Executive Member whose journey seamlessly blends science, service, and culture. With a PharmD and advanced training in pharmacology from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bangalore, India, Anjana brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep curiosity to our committee. Her research in Dr. Bhandari’s lab explores how environmental stressors impact germ cell development, using both fish and mouse models to unlock epigenetic insights. But her impact doesn’t stop at the bench—Anjana plays a vital role in shaping ACES by championing professional growth, supporting peers in their career journeys, and carefully preserving our committee’s evolving legacy.
When she’s not advancing science or strengthening our community, you might find her swimming, practicing yoga, or immersing herself in vibrant cultural festivals. Anjana reminds us what it means to be a scientist with soul—grounded, curious, and connected.
