CWCIT - Coastal Washington County Institute of Technology We are a local Technical School offering 11 programs to local High School Students.

Our seniors in the college Medical Terminology course are moving right along through the body systems! What a great way to prepare for future classes and careers by learning how to break down medical terms, understand their meanings, and build a strong foundation for learning. Medical Terminology truly is one of the best courses to help students prepare for a future career in healthcare!

As we wrapped up our studies of the cardiovascular system, we took those medical terms and put them to good use with a hands-on heart dissection lab!

There is something pretty awesome about being able to visualize and explore the anatomy you’ve been learning about in the classroom. Connecting the terminology to a real anatomical structure makes learning come alive!

A special THANK YOU to CNA student Molly Gray for donating her bear heart for our seniors to use for this lab. With hunting season in full swing-keep our class in mind if you have any spare organs you might want to donate for "science". Our community never disappoints and the students have had lots of hands on learning thanks to local hunters.

Chef Mawhinney recently had her first year culinary students present a variety of sauces, ingredients, infused with large amounts of creativity, to present red hot dogs to a panel of judges. Judges enjoyed such culinary delights as trash dogs (inspired by a student's memory of cleaning up the trash after her dog knocked it over), dino dogs, corn dogs, breakfast dogs (presented like french toast). Each student had to incorporate the use of a bun in the recipe, plate the presentation, and verbally introduce their creation to the panel of judges.

It was a wonderful and creative learning experience for all, as Chef Mawhinney prepares her culinary students to think creatively, work as a team and gain confidence in the kitchen. Cash prizes were awarded as well to the top three students.

Hands on, minds on. CWCIT students have been supporting the efforts of Sunrise trail for the past few weeks. Margeret Robinson, Down East Sunrise Trails Treasurer, approached CWCIT and asked if we could assist with their project located near the Cherryfield flats. Down East Sunrise Trails was the recipient of an AARP grant and wanted support to build their campground. The work included building an information kiosk, shelter over a picnic table, as well as a lean to. With a completion deadline of October 3 looming, CWCIT programs kicked in to lend a hand. Welding, Building trades and CDL students having spent several mornings and afternoons assisting with the construction. The deadline was met!

Jim Roberts, CWCIT Director noted, "We do our best at the center to support organizations, such as Down East Sunrise Trail, which intersects most of the towns where students attending the centers reside. This provides us with a chance to apply skills learned in the classroom to real world applications. Teamwork, project design, communication and collaboration skills were reinforced, as well as cross training within our programs. Every student and staff member involved will drive past that campground for years, and realize that they helped to construct it. Instilling a sense of pride and community involvement cannot be fully taught within the classroom setting, like it can be in the field. I am very proud that our staff and students stepped in and were able to help."

Senior students in our Health Occupations program who are enrolled in Bridge Academy recently had a wonderful opportunity to explore their future career and college options through ICAPs (Individual Career and Academic Plans) and WOWI (World of Work Inventory) career assessments.

With guidance from Bridge Academy Coordinator, Corrie Hunkler, and the Health Occupations Instructor, Stacey Balicki, students worked through these assessments to learn more about their individual interests, strengths, and potential career pathways. They then explored programs and careers that interested them, taking the next step by researching college programs, admission requirements, program curriculum, and other important information to help them plan for their future.

What is Bridge Academy?

Bridge Academy provides students with an opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school, helping to create a bridge between high school and post-secondary education. The program gives students a chance to explore college and career pathways, build confidence, and begin preparing for their goals beyond high school.

For our Health Occupations students, this is an especially valuable opportunity. They are not only learning about careers in healthcare through their CTE coursework, but they are also gaining the tools and information needed to make informed decisions about college programs and their future careers.

We are so fortunate to have Bridge Academy available to our students and our school! Opportunities like this help students connect what they are learning today with the possibilities that await them tomorrow.

Learning Beyond the Classroom! 🌿🎨📚

Our morning Early Childhood Education students had a wonderful day of learning in the community on Thursday, September 17!

Students began at WHRL’s Milbridge Commons, exploring outdoor learning ideas and gathering inspiration for our own program, including plans for a mud kitchen and outdoor art nook.

They then visited Milbridge Elementary, where they toured the school and helped K–3 students walk to the Milbridge Theater and Community Arts Center to see the spectacular Mr. Drew and His Animals Too!

Better Milbridge sent a wonderful thank you to our CWCIT students, appreciating the way they assisted the children, took photos, and helped Mr. Drew with his animals.

Our students are excited to continue visiting area elementary schools and childcare centers as they learn more about the joys and challenges of working with young children. ❤️

First week in the books for the morning and afternoon Health Occupations Program! 🩺❤️

What a great week it was! The returning seniors jumped right in, diving into medical terminology and building the foundation for everything that lies ahead. They are learning all the vocab needed for a career in healthcare and earning college credits at the same time. That’s a win!

Our afternoon class of 15 officially began their CNA journey, starting with one of the most important pieces of healthcare-infection control.

There were good conversations, lots of learning, plenty of questions, and the first of many hands-on skills were practiced!

The biggest news of the year though is…WE HAVE A NEW CLASSROOM WITH WINDOWS!!! ☀️😂 After many years of a classroom without them, we’re pretty sure this makes it the best year ever!

It’s always exciting to watch a new group of students take those first steps toward a career in healthcare. We’re just getting started, and we can’t wait to see where this year takes them!

We’ve been thinking about all of the Health Occ alums who have headed back to college. We’re so proud of you all! If you need anything, you know where to find us!!! You’ve got this!!!
