Sue has studied music since she was 6 years old and has been teaching piano for over 20 years. Please call or message to inquire about lessons. Thank you.

I have been teaching music for 25+ years and was trained in classical music. I have a love for teaching music and believe the experience of learning piano should be taught in a low-stress environment. By allowing students to choose their own favorite music pieces along with a structured curriculum, I try to provide an enjoyable experience that will motivate students to continue learning. Adult students are welcome and I will travel for lessons outside of the studio.

Recent research shows that music is not just an auditory art, but one of the most powerful tools for reshaping and strengthening the brain. When someone begins learning music, their brain undergoes profound changes: neural connections between different regions increase, white matter pathways grow thicker, and an unprecedented coordination emerges between the auditory, motor, and cognitive centers. That is why scientists call music a “full workout for the brain.”

From a scientific perspective, the reason behind these wide-ranging effects lies in neuroplasticity. Studies reveal that musical training increases the levels of proteins such as BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor)—a key molecule that enhances growth, survival, and the formation of synaptic connections. This means every music practice session not only strengthens existing neural connections but also lays the foundation for new pathways. This very process prepares the brain for faster learning, greater flexibility in problem-solving, and stronger resistance to neurological disorders.

The fascinating point is that these changes are not limited to musical performance alone. The neural networks strengthened through music practice extend to other abilities as well: from learning new languages to improving working memory, sharpening focus and attention, and even enhancing emotional regulation. It is just like a mental gym, where every session of playing an instrument makes the brain stronger in multiple dimensions.

Did you know that music and language share an overlapping neural pathway in the young brain? 🧠🎶

From birth to age 6, children use their music-processing network to identify, understand, and reproduce language sounds. Plus, kids who can clap a steady beat between ages 3-4 are often ready to start reading by age 5! 📚👶

Understanding these connections can help us support early childhood development in powerful ways!

When a child learns an instrument, like the piano, they’re not just practicing finger movements—they’re training their brain to focus. 🧠 Playing music develops selective attention, a powerful skill that helps students concentrate and succeed in other areas of learning.

Music teachers, you already know this: every scale, every note, every practice session is shaping young minds for more than just music. The benefits ripple through their entire education! 🎶

🎶 Did you know that familiar music engages the aging brain in fascinating ways? A recent study reveals how older adults recall music as vividly as younger listeners—but their brains take a different path to get there.

These findings could reshape how we use music to support memory and cognitive function, especially in aging populations.

Our founder, Dr. Anita Collins has been quoted in the Joint Select Committee on Arts and Music Education and Training in New South Wales Report released last week, emphasizing the life-changing impact of music education:

👉 “Music learning improves academic achievements and feelings of self-worth for all children, including those with a disability and children who are neurodiverse.”

🌟 At Bigger Better Brains, we’re always advocating for music teachers everywhere because their work is shaping brighter futures for every child. 🧠❤️🎶
