This is really bad news. Thats because the Miami tribe of Indiana is neither a state nor federally recognized. What THAT means is that essentially they are doing this for money. They are not supported as a tribe, so they need these efforts. The land acknowledgement the team is giving has Tribes (like the Algonquin) who have statements against the mascots. They can't even have the Indiana Miami Tribe in their land acknowledgement. It sucks so much that white Communities can use Indigenous people this way. Using racism to fuel more racism. Typical colonizing bull s**t

This is absolutely absurd .

And that's all folks!!

Native American mascots are OVER in Colorado!!!!
We're ecstatic by this news and hope this very small action is just the beginning.

(Main image from the horribly inappropriate Save the Indian rally held on Indigenous Rights Day)

The committee, however, did soften the blow for the nearly two dozen public schools that use Indian mascots and that are not part of cooperative agreements with Native American tribes.

Hello Friends! Great news for this Friday!

Cheyenne Mountain has officially taken the next steps to choose a new mascot!

The Cheyenne Mountain High School Student Council has created a poll of four choices as the new possible mascot as chosen by the current student body.
The Four choices are:
The Miners
The Mammoths
The Red-Tailed Hawks
The Wild

You can vote for your favorite choice on the attached GoogleDoc.
Anyone can vote!

Following the retirement of the "Indians" team name at Cheyenne Mountain High School, the CMHS Student Council initiated a process for identifying a new team name and mascot for the school. The 4 most popular choices identified by the student body, along with a student-written narrative in support o...

Hello friends!!
Happy Friday!

We have an update for our GoFund Me and where the money is going. Though we are District 12, the money will be going to benefit Title IX in District 11.

We also have some detailed information as to why. Also, be happy! Kids in D11 need support too.

We're also so happy to announce that after just ONE email to district 11, they will be meeting to discuss changing the names of their schools named after those who took part in the murder of Native Americans in the Sand Creek Massacre.

One more important detail in our message is in regards to an opposing fundraiser to bring NAGA to COS to argue to keep the mascot and the initial push to recall the CMSD Board Members who voted for change that is being (very interestingly) influenced by the one Board Member who voted "No" to equity.

Nearly $3000 sits unused and at NOM-CMHS, we want to ensure accountability and that the funds go to benefit the NA community.

Have a great weekend!

This attitude and mindset is exactly why Native American culture doesn't have the respect it deserves.

The history of Native Americans isn't to be dumbed down to a high school mascot at a majority whyte school.

The NA culture is rich, runs deep, and was well established by the time Europeans came here and took this land by force.

Sa****um was widely lambasted over his remarks, with many accusing him of whitewashing the atrocities committed against indigenous peoples.

This Washington Post article explains the new Colorado bill and even mentions Cheyenne Mountain by name.

They then do an amazing job explaining the long fight this has been with perspective from Native Americans who have been negatively impacted by this racial mascots.

Children have been hurt and teased about their race for the sake of American high school sports.
When we know better, we do better.

Any one who supports keeping these mascots is not only ignoring wishes of millions of Native Americans but ok with children, who can't be expected to brush things off like adults, hurting.
Places of education must be inclusive.

Colorado lawmakers are considering a proposal to ban Native American mascots in public schools and colleges

SB21-116 PASSED THROUGH COMMITTEE (5-2 bipartisan support)... AND MOVES ON TO THE GENERAL COMMITTEE!
