One thing I have learned from decades of
hiking, trekking, and land navigation is:
You have to check your bearings regularly.
Landmarks get lost,
Destinations disappear,
the trail gets twisted and turned.
It's the same with life.
Sometimes life is hard,
and the road is long.
It's easy to feel lost,
overwhelmed,
stuck,
or trapped.
Purpose fades when you forget why you started.
Momentum disappears when you lose sight of your why.
Your "why" is your way forward,
when things get hard,
when you hit the wall,
when you stumble or fall,
when you lose your way.
Before a new week begins,
reconnect with your why.
Your why is your compass.
Check your bearings.
Ask yourself:
Why does this goal matter to you?
Why are you fighting so hard for it?
Why is it worth investing your time and energy in it?
Who are you becoming because of it?
Clarity begins and ends with purpose.
The stronger your why,
the steadier your momentum.
There is ALWAYS a way!

The Power of the After-Action Review
Philosopher George Santayana famously said:
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
In 18 years at USAFA,
I've learned the power of an After-Action Review.
In every military operation,
victory isn’t the end —
it’s the beginning of reflection.
What went right?
What went wrong?
What must change?
The same process applies to life.
Every week, conduct your own After-Action Review.
Not to criticize —
but to learn.
Don't repeat the week.
Review it.
Learn from it.
Leverage it.
Reflection turns experience into strategy.
Here is an easy 5-step after-action reflection template for the week:
1. What were my objectives for the week?
2. What were my wins, my outcomes, my results?
3. What challenges came up? Where there any setbacks?
4. What are my biggest takeaways? What can I learn from the week?
5. What adjustments can I make for next week?

Stay on the Field
People lose momentum not because they’re weak —
but because they step off the field.
Life gets hard sometimes.
The battle gets tough.
The fog rolls in.
You can't see the way forward.
You can barely put one foot in front of the other.
Doubt whispers,
fear creeps in,
and clarity fades.
I know that feeling.
It hurts.
It sucks.
It feels like it will never end.
There have been times in my life,
when I have cried out:
"I'm done.
Pull me out, coach.
I've got nothing left.
I can't win.
I don't know how to fix this."
But if you stay on the field —
even when progress is slow —
the light will break through,
the fear will fade,
the doubts will slink away,
and clarity will return.
Show up —
instead of give up.
Dig in —
instead of give in.
Do the next right thing.
One "impossible" task at a time.
Momentum will follow.
There is ALWAYS a way!

Small Steps, Big Shifts
Momentum isn’t built in a day.
It’s built daily.
Small steps.
Big shifts.
The smallest daily wins create the biggest long-term change.
Want to shift your life?
Shift your focus from outcomes to actions.
Don’t ask, “What do I want to achieve?”
Ask, “What small action moves me closer today?”
Because consistency compounds.
Tiny victories,
stacked daily,
create unstoppable momentum.

The Art of War for Life - Clarity
The Battle for Clarity After 17 years of mentoring modern warriors, I discovered that life's toughest battles aren’t fought in the field ... they’re fought within the silent chambers of the heart and mind. Every day, I watched high-performing cadets, enlisted airmen, and officers wrestle with

The Bridge Between Intention and Destination
I have a friend who builds bridges.
He is a unique blend of vision and action.
Everyone has intentions.
Few build the bridge to their destination.
That bridge is built with clarity and courage.
Without clarity, your intentions scatter.
Without courage, your actions stall —
and you never arrive at your destination.
Momentum is built when clarity
meets consistent action —
that takes courage.
The courage to step into the unknown.
The courage to hang out in the void.
The courage to cling to your vision —
well before anyone else can see it.
long after everyone else has said: "There's no way."
Every time you take one small,
intentional step toward what matters —
you build the bridge across the gap —
between where you are and where you want to be.

A Warrior's Discipline
I am a warrior,
not because I never fail,
but because I always fight;
not because I never fall,
but because I always rise.
Discipline is the courage to begin again.
Discipline isn’t about perfection —
it’s about starting over and beginning again.
Most people's resolutions last two weeks.
Missed a day?
Fell short?
Lost focus?
You haven’t failed —
you’ve been invited to try again.
The strongest warriors aren’t the ones who never fall —
they’re the ones who rise every single time.
The warrior's discipline is the refusal to accept
failure as a final destination —
as anything other than a stepping stone to success!
It's time to redefine failure.
Failure isn't evidence that you can't succeed.
It's fuel for immanent progress,
it's fertilizer for future growth.
Find your reason to rise.
If your mission matters,
start again —
today.
Recommit.
Victory is on the other side of
ONE MORE TRY!

Mindset Monday: Motion ≠ Progress
When I was a kid we took a lot of road trips.
I would often would ask:
"Are we there yet?"
To which my Dad would jokingly respond:
"I don't know where we're going,
but we're making good time!"
Movement feels good.
Progress feels better.
Many people mistake busyness for momentum.
But without clarity,
motion becomes chaos.
The same is true of our lives.
If you don’t know what you’re fighting for —
you’ll waste energy fighting for things that don't matter.
If you don't know where you're going —
you'll waste time and energy going nowhere.
Having a clear destination is difference between
running on a treadmill and running cross-country —
both will stack miles,
but only one will get you,
somewhere different from where you started.
This week, slow down. Ask yourself:
“Is what I’m doing right now,
moving me toward what matters most?”
Busyness isn’t progress.
Motion isn’t momentum.
Get clear on your destination,
then move with purpose.
That’s how progress begins.

Sunday Reset: Realign with Your Mission
Before the new week begins,
realign with your mission.
Ask yourself:
Is what I’m doing aligned with what I want to accomplish in my life?
Is how I'm showing up in my life aligned with who I want to be?
Am I fighting the battles that matter most?
Clarity isn’t a one-time revelation —
it’s a daily practice.
Every week, every day, every hour we can realign.
We can refine.
We can reset.
Because direction matters more than speed.
Speed means nothing —
if you’re headed the wrong direction.
Align your life with your values,
your vision,
your priorities,
your purpose,
your mission.

Reflection Saturday: Review Your Week
Winners review every battle.
Reflection isn’t about guilt —
it’s about growth.
Growth doesn't come from experience —
it comes from reflection.
Ask yourself:
What went right this week?
What challenged me?
Where did I stumble?
What did I learn about myself?
How am I going to improve next week?
Every week is a lesson in disguise.
Don’t just survive your life.
Study it. Learn from it.
Learn the art of strategic reflection.

Focus Friday: Choose One Battle & Win it!
You can’t win ten battles at once.
The Art of War states:
“Those who try to be strong everywhere, are strong nowhere.”
Your strength comes from focus.
So today, choose one battle.
The one that truly matters.
The one that moves the mission forward.
Then go all in.
Focus isn’t saying no to everything —
it’s saying yes to what matters most.
You don't have to do everything all at once.
Pick your spot.
Choose your battle —
and win it today.

Win small, win often.
I have always loved cairns —
that stack of rocks that marks the trail,
that shows the way,
that points us toward our destination,
toward the summit, toward victory!
On long hikes, I find myself celebrating —
each cairn, each stack of rocks —
it reminds me to enjoy the journey,
to enjoy the process,
and appreciate the little things.
The stack of rocks in this image,
actually rests on a foundation
of thousands of tiny pieces of gravel.
Victory isn’t just one giant moment —
it’s the result of a thousand small wins.
All the tiny efforts, investments, and sacrifices,
that people often overlook or take for granted.
Every effort — no matter how small —
contributes to progress.
each step forward compounds momentum.
The problem?
Most people only celebrate the finish line.
Winners and warriors celebrate the process —
because process is the secret to progress.
Today, choose one small, clear objective —
and win it.
Then choose another —
and win it.
Then select a third —
and win it.
Then win them again tomorrow,
and the next day,
and the day after that.
Three small pebbles each day,
to lay the foundation of success.
Because when you win each day,
you start winning the weeks,
and when you win the weeks,
you win the months,
then the years,
and ultimately —
you win in life.
Start stacking small wins today.
and lay the foundation of victory!

The Power of Pause
Sometimes the most powerful move you can make is the pause.
Great commanders don’t rush the next attack —
they wait, watch, and see the battlefield clearly.
The same is true in life.
When you’re overwhelmed,
stressed, or uncertain,
stop reacting.
Take a breathe.
Take a step back.
Take a break.
Take a 5-minute walk outside.
Because clarity doesn’t come from reaction —
it comes from the space between action.
It doesn't come from commotion —
it comes from vision.
Pausing isn’t weakness.
It’s wisdom.
Reclaim your clarity under pressure.
