Saturday is always a joy. I love teaching. But I really love teaching art. And Saturdays are an immersion in drawing and painting. From 10-12 I have Rich who is a phenomenal Charcoal artist. He came to
Me cause of his “interest”. And she he started he has progressed by leaps and bounds. Here is his latest work.

I guess it was the heat, or at least that’s what the weatherman said, but I feel like someone hit me square between the eyes. Not really physically, but mentally. Do you ever feel like that? Just wasted. My husband ask if I wanted to take a nap, but I’m too tired for that. I’m a teacher. School starts in less than a week for some of us and a couple of days for others. Summer went by so fast, did you actually get to relax? To de stress? Probably not, now you are looking at another school year and you are already tired. There’s hope. Honest. There is. I created this space, a studio in Owasso just for people like us that need an outlet, an encouraging creative peaceful place for us to share, laugh and find that inner silence we all need. What does it mean to be an Unhurried Artist?

One person. One drawing. A generous piece of paper. And time.

Time to look. Time to make a mark, change it, erase it, and try again. Time to discover that an edge doesn’t always need a line and that sometimes the light—or even what you choose to leave alone—can say more than another mark ever could.

There is no rush here to finish something just so we can say it is finished.

We work. We look. We talk. We step back. And then we look again.

I think some of the best learning happens when a teacher is willing to stop teaching for a moment and simply give a student the room to work.

Rich has been working on this charcoal landscape one Saturday at a time. Each week we return to some of the same ideas—shape, value, edges, light—but we look at them a little more deeply than we did the week before.

That is The Unhurried Artist.

We aren’t racing toward the next project.

Six weeks.

That’s all.

Six weeks ago this student sat down in my studio with a piece of charcoal and a willingness to learn.

We didn’t begin with “how to draw a landscape.”

We began with learning to see.

We studied light before lines.
We searched for shapes instead of outlines.
We learned that edges are created by value—not by tracing everything with a pencil.

Week after week we slowed down.

We talked.
We observed.
We experimented.
We erased.
We tried again.

Today’s lesson was creating this creek landscape from a single black-and-white reference photograph.

The reference is clipped beside the easel.
The finished charcoal drawing is what now stands on the paper.

It isn’t about copying a photograph.

It’s about learning to truly observe.

Watching a student begin to understand value, atmosphere, depth, and confidence is one of the greatest joys of teaching.

Talent grows when someone takes the time to nurture it.

That’s what one-on-one instruction allows.

There are no shortcuts.
No rushing.
Just careful observation, thoughtful coaching, and steady progress.

Every artist deserves someone who believes they can become more than they imagined.
