Howdy, fellow Aggies. My name is Taowan Yang, and I am the current President of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) and a proud member of the fighting Texas Aggie class of 2018. The reason that I am speaking out to you all is because our community of Aggie Chinese students discovered through our close allies at the University of Texas at Austin of an incident that deeply saddened and angered the Longhorn Chinese student community there. The incident involved the posting of a hateful flyer that was posted on academic buildings around the UT campus, and which promoted an ethics course to Chinese students by using unacceptable language and racist stereotypes.
We all know that these flyers are insulting and unwelcomed by both our UT counterparts and us. We are grateful that the UT administration has publicly denounced such disrespectful actions, and our CSSA stands by our UT CSSA friends in also denouncing this type of awful behavior. Like our respective universities, our CSSA chapters also take great pride in diversity and inclusion through many activities ranging from hosting events that celebrate cultural exchanges to achieving cross-collaboration academic excellence with both our domestic and international peers.
Therefore, we as the flagship organization of the largest international student community at Texas A&M University have an obligation to not only stand up and publicly condone such hateful behaviors here or beyond our campus, but to also encourage our own international student community to also fearlessly speak out and say no to intolerance. We believe in a diverse campus that celebrates inclusivity, and urge you all to report incidents that go against our Aggie core values. If you see such incidents, do not ignore it. Instead, report it immediately to STOP HATE (http://stophate.tamu.edu/) so that we encourage a better climate on campus.
I am proud of my Chinese heritage and also proud to be an Aggie, and I hope that our Aggie Chinese community will stand together with our fellow Aggies to continue to be a proud international academic and research institution. Thanks, and gig'em!
Howdy!
Thanks, and gig’em!
