Recapture alert!
People travel from far and wide to visit our Xtreme Hummingbird Xtravaganza, but they've got nothing on this little guy! At Saturday's XHX, our team caught a juvenile male Ruby-throated Hummingbird who had already been banded. After the event, Kay sent the band number to her fellow banders, and we got a reply from Pennsylvania! This bird had been caught, banded, and released in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on July 25, 2026! In the seven weeks since, he had flown all the way to Lake Jackson, Texas. We can't be sure of his exact routes, but we know that he flew at least 1,300 miles.
Recaptures like these help us learn more about hummingbirds migrations, where they go, how quickly they get there, how long they stay, etc.
Congrats to the lucky adopter of this awesome bird, and the banding teams in PA and TX!

If you are at the fair today between now and 2:00, come to the Hwy Gardens next to the MDC building and learn about invasive species. Kids can visit the booths by MDC, MPF, Quail Forever, and more and get a stamp in their "passport" and then turn in that passport at the forestry table and get a prize!!
