Focused Living Blog I help mothers who have lost a child live a meaningful life with less guilt while honoring the child they lost. Grief + Joy can coexist.

I never want another bereaved mother to feel stuck, lost, or alone. Period.

When I lost my 12 year old son in 2010, I felt all of these emotions and then some. I had no clue as to which right step to take next. After the first few years I had to make a decision.

Would I continue to stay sad all of the time or could I possibly feel joy again? But, even that felt heavy.

Would people judge me for genuinely laughing again and think that I had forgotten about losing my son? Would I have to forget about the accident in order to move forward? I had no clue!

Now that I am 13 and half years out from the worst day of my life, I have a new perspective and mission. I am being certified to be a grief coach so I can help others move forward in their grief. It is my prayer that my experiences and expertise will allow another mother to find solace, peace, purpose, and a way to experience joy again in life.

Your friend has just experienced one of the worst losses imaginable and we don't know how to respond. Many times we just don't know what to say to someone who has lost a child, or spouse. Words don't seem sufficient.

I can tell you from experience that it doesn't take grand gestures or elaborately written words to show someone that you are there for them when the unthinkable happens.

Sometimes, it is just the simple acknowledgement or offer that means the most.

To the mother who has lost a child: You get to choose how to deal with Mother’s Day. You are the one that is missing a part of yourself.

Do not feel like you have to show up as if nothing has happened. No matter how long ago it has been since you lost your child. Everyone’s grief is different and unique. The way you navigate this time of year can be just as different and unique.

Maybe you choose not to go to church on that Sunday. And that’s okay.

Maybe you choose to be alone on that Sunday. And that’s okay.

Maybe you choose to go on a day trip. And that’s okay.

However you choose to navigate that day is up to you. If you choose one way this year and it is not a good fit for you, then next year choose something different.

Show yourself grace, kindness, and patience.

Here are a few more ways to practice self-care during these difficult holidays:

• Stay off-line.

• Get outside if the weather permits and go on a leisurely walk.

• Take a nap.

• Journal your feelings.

• Remember to breathe.

Are you struggling with moving forward in your grief journey?

Everyone’s grief is unique and your grieving does not happen in a linear manner. Grief feels like a roller coaster with twists and turns that you might not see coming.

It can be challenging, but you don’t have to navigate it by yourself.

A grief coach can walk beside you and help you determine what you want your journey to look like. They can help set goals and provide support along the way.

• You deserve to feel less confused.

• You deserve to have a guide along the way.

• you deserve to have a safe place to discuss your fears and dreams for your future.

Send a DM if you have more questions about how a grief coach could help you or someone you love.

Thankful for a God that doesn’t hold my past against me. We are not defined by our past. It’s gone. It can’t be changed.

We have to remind ourselves that what we do moving forward is what matters. Follow God. Trust God. Lean on God. Talk to God. Invest in that relationship!
