All 61 of the Northern Lakes Fire District personnel, which include firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, captains, battalion chiefs and engineers, are forgoing raises this year to try to help 21 of their own keep their jobs amid a tax levy that’s up for a vote to give the fire district proper funding.

Designed for healthcare professionals, counselors, social workers, and caregivers, this in-depth training provides a model for better understanding, identifying, and accompanying those experiencing complex grief.

Today marks one year since we experienced the tragic losses and events on Canfield mountain. My heart is so heavy as I think of the families who lost their loved ones. My heart goes out to so many others as well - to Dave Tysdal and his family, to the others who responded and experienced the trauma first hand; to the dispatchers; to the clinicians, chaplains and peer support who stepped in immediately and continue to help share the burden; to each of our impacted agencies (and their families); to every community partner who stepped in to assist; to those who traveled from far and wide to help share our grief. The list could go on and on as the impact was and continues to be felt so deeply by so many. Please reach out when it is feeling like a lot. Talk to your coworkers, friends and loved ones. Talk to a member of your peer support and/or Chaplain team. Talk to a trusted clinician (please send a message if you would like assistance finding one). Please just don’t bottle it up. Grief and trauma are powerful, but you can heal and thrive. You deserve to heal and thrive.

June 29th Memorial planned for June 29, 2026

Kootenai County Fire & Rescue and the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department will honor our fallen brothers with a remembrance ceremony at 10:00am on June 29, 2026. This brief ceremony will be held at the Avista Pavilion at McEuen Park in Coeur d’Alene. Personnel from both fire departments and their families will be remembering our lost brothers, friends, and mentors- John G. Morrison and Frank J. Harwood.

McEuen Park will remain open during this event, and the public is invited to attend. We would like to provide the community with an opportunity to pay their respects, and to allow the fire service community a chance to give our thanks to all those that have supported us through this horrible incident. Please be aware that access and parking will be limited, so those attending should plan accordingly.

Our community showed up for us in an extraordinary way last year, and we are deeply grateful. Thank you to everyone who visited our stations, joined the processions, and lined our roadways as we transported our brothers to and from Spokane. Thank you also to all who participated in fundraisers for the families, donated to the Red and Blue Foundation and the Jeff Welch Foundation, left handmade tributes, or simply stopped to check on us. Your love and support have
meant more than words can express.

There will be a designated area at the pavilion for media coverage during the memorial. We will have designated Fire Department personnel available to interact with the media from 9:00-9:30a.m. prior to the event. Additionally, we will be holding a joint press conference for all interested parties on Thursday June 18, 2026, at 10:00am at the KCFR “Frank J Harwood Training Campus” located at 5271 E. Seltice Way in Post Falls.
