Yes! 👏 Reading difficulties don’t simply disappear with time.
Time is not an intervention. When a student is struggling, early identification and explicit, systematic, evidence-based instruction matter. The sooner we identify the skill gaps and provide targeted intervention, the sooner we can begin changing the trajectory. Don’t wait for students to fail longer before providing the instruction they need. ❤️📚

Reading is complex, but these five areas all play an important role.

Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension are often referred to as The Big 5 of Reading.

Strong reading instruction doesn’t focus on just one piece. Students need opportunities to develop each of these skills, with explicit, systematic instruction based on what they need.

And an important reminder: when a student is struggling to read, we need to figure out which piece or pieces are getting in the way so instruction and intervention can be targeted.

Every piece matters. 💛
