🦴 Dollar Tree finds + an educator's imagination = learning opportunities! 🌱

I can't be the only one who walks through Dollar Tree and sees learning activities in the most random things! 😂

I spotted these little bones and just HAD to incorporate them into our Pre-K learning at Rangeline Sprouts!

With one simple find, I've created activities exploring:

🦴 Math & counting
🦴 Name building & letter recognition
🦴 Patterns & sequencing
🦴 Fine motor skills

And because I love sharing resources with fellow homeschool families, parents, and educators, I'm offering these activity pages completely FREE!

📚 Next up in our homeschool: Island of Spies! 🕵️‍♂️

Waylen got to choose his next book unit, and this is the one he picked! We LOVE book units around here. There’s just something about taking a good book and letting it spill over into history, science, geography, writing, hands-on projects, and all the rabbit trails along the way.

And this one is going to be FUN.

Island of Spies by Sheila Turnage is set on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, during WWII, so we're turning his study into an entire Agent Waylen Case File. 🗂️🔎

Over the next several weeks, he'll be diving into:
🕵️ Reading comprehension through clues, evidence logs, suspects, predictions & theories
🌎 Mapping Hatteras Island, the Outer Banks & Atlantic shipping routes
⚓ Learning about German U-boats off the American coast during WWII
🇺🇸 Exploring the American home front, blackouts, rationing & civilian life during the war
🔬 Experimenting with submarines, buoyancy & pressure
👀 Building his own periscope
🔐 Learning Morse code & Caesar ciphers and creating secret messages
📰 Writing a 1942 newspaper article & classified intelligence reports
📁 Building an ongoing spy dossier as he reads

And instead of ending with a traditional book report, he'll complete a Final Intelligence Briefing, where he'll use his case file to present what he discovered about the story AND the real history behind it.

This is one of my favorite things about homeschooling. A book doesn't have to stay a reading assignment. It can become the doorway into an entire world of learning.

Same materials. Different learning goals. 🍂

I found these adorable little wooden leaves at Hobby Lobby and knew immediately they were coming to the Sprout Studio!

Today, both of my Little Sprouts worked with the same leaves—but their activities looked a little different.

🍁 With my 3-year-old, we focused on visual matching—looking closely at the shape, color, and details of each leaf to find its match.
🍂 With my 5-year-old, we took it a step further and worked on creating and continuing ABAB patterns.

This is one of my favorite parts of teaching a mixed-age group. I don't need completely different activities for every child. I can take one simple, hands-on material and adjust the challenge to meet each Little Sprout right where they are. 🌱

Same leaves. Same table. Different skills growing. 💚

🎃 Little hands, BIG learning! 🎃

Today one of our Little Sprouts explored our pumpkin eggs—and what started with putting the matching pumpkin faces together turned into so much more!

🥚 Matching the pumpkin halves
🙌 Strengthening fine motor skills while lining up, twisting, pushing, and pulling the eggs apart
📏 Sorting them by short & tall
🔢 Counting how many we had
👀 Comparing, noticing differences, and problem-solving along the way

One simple basket of pumpkin eggs gave us opportunities for fine motor development, early math, sorting, counting, matching, and lots of hands-on exploration.

This is what learning looks like at Rangeline Sprouts. 🌱 We play. We explore. We learn along the way. 🧡

Our first adventure begins with Mole Catches the Sky! I’m so excited to share this little box of storytelling, exploration, and play with your family.

Each kit includes:

📖 Mole Catches the Sky book
🤎 A handmade Mole plush, crocheted by a talented local woman, Cassie Marie
🌿 Brown play dough
🪱 A little loot bag filled with worms, acorns, leaves, tea light candle and blue gems for imaginative play
