We started with geoboards… and somehow ended up wrapping Mickey, Minnie & Daisy in rubber bands. 😂❤️

And THIS is exactly why I love child-led learning.

What started as stretching rubber bands across a geoboard turned into, “Hmm… what else can I stretch these around?” Before long, the toys became the new geoboards!

It may look like simple, silly play, but there was actually so much learning happening:

🌱 Fine motor strength — stretching and positioning those bands works those little hand and finger muscles.

🌱 Bilateral coordination — holding the toy steady with one hand while manipulating the rubber band with the other.

🌱 Hand-eye coordination & dexterity — figuring out how to maneuver bands around tiny arms, ears, bows and feet.

🌱 Motor planning & problem solving — How do I get it over this part? Do I turn the toy? Stretch it farther? Try another way?

🌱 Spatial awareness — exploring size, shape, position and tension.

🌱 Focus & persistence — because getting a rubber band exactly where a 3-year-old wants it takes some determination!

But my favorite part? No adult planned this.

A three-year-old took a material we were using one way and discovered an entirely new way to explore it. We followed the curiosity instead of redirecting it.

Sometimes learning looks like a carefully planned activity.

And sometimes… it looks like Minnie Mouse wrapped in rubber bands. 😂🌱

Their pace. Their path. Their discoveries. 💚

Sometimes the simplest things hold SO much learning. 🌱🤍

At Rangeline Sprouts, after we practice tracing our names with dry erase markers, I’ll hand them a cotton ball to erase it. It might look like we’re just cleaning up our work, but there’s actually a whole lot happening in those little hands!

Using a cotton ball to erase helps build:

✋ Fine motor strength — pinching and gripping the cotton ball works those little hand and finger muscles needed for writing.

👀 Hand-eye coordination — their eyes are watching the lines while their hands work to erase them.

✏️ Pre-writing skills — when they erase along the letters, they’re essentially tracing their name all over again!

🧠 Motor planning & directionality — following each letter encourages intentional movements and helps children begin understanding how letters are formed.

🤏 Pressure control — they discover how much pressure and movement it takes to make the marker disappear.

☁️ Sensory exploration — soft cotton + smooth dry erase surface + the resistance of the marker gives them another tactile learning experience.

🔤 Letter & name recognition — they’re interacting with the letters in their name one more time, just in a completely different way.

And sometimes? I just let them scrub, scrub, scrub! 😂 There’s value in that movement and exploration, too.

Other times, I turn it into a little challenge:

💬 “Can your cotton ball follow every letter in your name?”

💬 “Let’s make your name disappear the same way we wrote it!”

💬 “Can you stay right on the lines?”

💬 “Which letter are you erasing now?”

💬 “Can you erase one letter at a time?”

It doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.

A dry erase marker, a cotton ball, and their own name = fine motor, sensory, literacy, and pre-writing practice all wrapped into one simple activity. 🌱

Goodness, I’m in my feels today. 🥹🌱

This table was gifted to us by Daniel’s grandmother when we bought our home 13 years ago. For years, it sat in our dining room and held so much more than meals. Bible studies happened around this table. Serious conversations. Laughter. Family moments. Home education lessons.

Then, for two years, it followed me into my classroom at the public school.

And now… it’s back home. At Rangeline Sprouts. ❤️

Every nook, scrape, paint mark, and worn spot has a story—and I wouldn’t change a single one.

The more Rangeline Sprouts comes together, the more I realize just how much of our family is woven into this little space. From my great-grandmother’s milk can and cast iron kettle, to this table from Daniel’s grandmother… pieces of the people and places that helped shape us are now part of something I once only dreamed about.

I wanted Rangeline Sprouts to feel like home.

Turns out, it quite literally carries pieces of ours. 🥹

There is so much history here. So much hope, love, and peace.

And now a whole new generation of little hands gets to gather around this table and add their own marks and memories to its story. 🌱🤎

Omg, all the fun plans I have for this little nook! 😍🌱

Our Rangeline Sprouts outdoor Nature Nook is starting to come together, and I can already picture so much learning happening right here—planting, digging, observing, creating, exploring and getting our hands dirty. 🐛🌿🔎

And that sweet potato growing in the galvanized tub? We grew it from a slip! 🍠💚 I can't wait for the Sprouts to watch it grow, explore what's happening beneath the soil, and eventually harvest our own sweet potatoes. 🌱☀️

ABC movement & matching! 🌱🔤

We used textured foam letters to find and match the letters on our rug. Such a simple activity, but it worked on letter recognition, sensory exploration, fine motor skills, visual discrimination, AND gross motor movement as we squatted, reached, and moved around the rug.

Learning through play and movement is the best kind of learning! 💚

🌱 Our Rangeline Sprouts Chalk Walk! 🌈

A little chalk, a little sunshine, and a whole lot of learning through play. 💚 Today our Sprouts got outside, moved their bodies, followed the path, and added a little color to our day!

First day of school. 🌱🤎

Today was amazing. What a blessing it is to be right here—watching a dream I prayed over, worked for, and poured my heart into come to life.

Today I got to welcome little Sprouts into a space created just for them—to learn, play, explore, and grow at their own pace. And somehow, I think I grew a little today too. 🥹🌿

My heart is so full. Rangeline Sprouts is officially growing. 🌱

Here’s to the very first day and all the beautiful days still to come. 🤎
