“When I left the Spencer Davis Group and formed Traffic, I specifically decided to not just cover these blues records - but to write stuff and infuse more elements of jazz, folk music, rock, ethnic music and all sorts of weird stuff that we could find to make some sort of concoction out of all of these elements without ever knowing what the concoction would be. We just knew we wanted to use all of the elements, instead of being stuck with one.

That is exactly what I’m doing, and from that day in 1967, I don’t think I’ve changed my thinking on that. I was often asked why, in the ’80s it appeared that I sold out and became more of a pop artist. But I always maintained that that stuff in the ‘80s – ‘Back in the High Life’ and ‘Higher Love’ – if you strip away the ’80s production style, the songs themselves are very similar to what Traffic was doing with elements of folk, Latin, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Celtic melodies, jazz and folk elements. So I’ve been doing that ever since, and I’m still doing it. I’m still juggling all these elements– to the point where I’m not even sure that the music I make is rock and roll.” - SW

Happy birthday to José Iturbi! At 0:30 appears his sister Amparo Iturbi with whom he plays a boogie-woogie in the movie Holiday in Mexico (1946) by George Sidney. The two little girls are in fact José Iturbi’s granddaughters. Their mother Maria – daughter of José – died the year this movie was made. Regarding this boogie woogie, it was arranged by a 16-year-old André Previn after an English nursery rhyme entitled Three Blind Mice, published in 1609 by Thomas Ravenscroft.

The Iturbis were Hollywood’s favorite pianists in the 1930s-40s. José was the first classical musician to have a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. José (1895-1980) would often perform with his sister Amparo Iturbi (1898-1969). They were born in Valencia, Spain and it was actually José who taught her sister: you will notice their similar curved/curled fingers technique, actioned like little hammers. At 14, José went to to Paris to study with Joaquim Malats and Victor Staub; he also studied harpsichord with the legend Wanda Landowska, from whom he inherited that peculiar finger technique. Amparo made her debut at 15 in Barcelona: apparently Granados was in attendance and predicted a great career for her! In 1925, she gave her first recital abroad, at Salle Gaveau in Paris. From then on, Amparo and José toured in Europe, playing as a duo: Belgium, England, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, etc. José debuted in the U.S. in 1929 where he would take on conducting duties: creating his own orchestra but also being at the helm of the NY Phil, the PO, the CSO, etc. Amparo made her U.S. debut in 1937 and I believe that’s when she moved there. They were quite known for their interpretations of Spanish music: you should listen to the Goyescas by Amparo. For their duet records, I’d recommend their Milhaud, Rhapsody in blue (arr. Iturbi) and Mozart discs.
