Instinct vs. Learning- Several years later, the results of this study by a student still holds true.
Kavita Gupta Narra- kudos to Arven!

This week our CuriosityClub was introduced to Behavioral Sciences by budding scientist Arven Narra ( Gupta Narra)

Arven’s topic was “Instinct vs. Learning” using the behavior of Zebra Finches.

We discussed different types of instincts and also “Learned Instinct” which is at the intersection of Learning and Instinct.

Let’s be honest: not every child is wired for rote memorization or heavy textbook learning. (If your child struggles with this, you are certainly not alone! , I was that child too!)

For many, the abstract only becomes real once it’s tangible. One small robotics project can do more than teach code—it builds a foundation of:
• Resilience: Learning that a "broken" build is just a puzzle waiting for a solution.
• Creative Autonomy: Realizing there are ten different ways to solve the same problem.
• Collaborative Spirit: Discovering that the best innovations happen when we lean on each other’s strengths.

Cultivating the Innovators of 2026
We are moving into an era that prizes curious thinkers and fearless creators over human encyclopedias. Hands-on STEM helps students uncover hidden abilities—the kind of grit and intuition they didn’t even know they possessed.

STEM has an Identity Problem 03/29/2026

This article by Jennifer Martin perfectly captures the philosophy behind CuriousHearts&Minds.
It addresses the "identity problem" in STEM—the idea that science and math are often viewed as rigid subjects to be mastered rather than a lens through which we understand and change the world.

In our organization, we believe that STEM isn't just about learning to code or memorizing formulas; it’s about fostering an identity where every student sees themselves as a problem-solver and a creator. When we move away from "performing" STEM and toward "living" it, we unlock true innovation and confidence in our kids.

Beyond the Buzzwords: The Real Work of STEM:
The truth is, true student-driven learning is far more complex and demanding to facilitate than a standard lesson plan. It is incredibly tough for educators to strike the right balance. It requires us to:
• Manage a dozen different ideas, designs, and approaches happening all at once in a single room.
• Draw on deep content knowledge to guide students toward a solution without ever just "giving" them the answer.
• Maintain constant flexibility as projects evolve in unexpected directions.
• Find the confidence to step back and allow for "productive struggle"—even when it's hard to watch.

It’s a heavy lift for any educator, but when we move away from "performing" STEM and toward "living" it, we unlock true innovation and lasting confidence in our kids.
