Summer can provide the opportunity to revisit texts more slowly and attentively; returning to arguments, ideas, and questions that often deserve more than a single reading.
At the Center for Civics, Culture and Society, that work continues beyond the classroom through sustained engagement with foundational texts and the traditions that shape civic life.

The work of civic education does not end with the academic calendar.
Summer offers a different kind of space for reading, reflection, and reconsideration—an opportunity to return to foundational texts and enduring questions with renewed attention.
The Center for Civics, Culture and Society looks forward to continuing that work in the months ahead.

As the spring semester begins to wind down, the Center for Civics, Culture and Society has continued its work bringing students and faculty together around the close reading of texts and the discussion of enduring questions in civic life.
In classrooms and public programs, this work has focused on careful attention to language, argument, and the habits of thought that support serious engagement with ideas.
We look forward to continuing these conversations in the months ahead.
ICYMI | America 250: A Nation is Born
Last week, the Center for Civics, Culture and Society hosted a discussion centered on a close reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Through the text, participants considered its structure, philosophical foundations, and the questions it continues to raise about political authority, equality, and the conditions of self-government.
A special thank you to our College of Film and Media Arts students for delivering the live reading with such panache.
We appreciate all who joined us for a thoughtful and engaged conversation.

In CIV 111: The American Republic, students are working to understand texts not as isolated statements, but as sustained arguments.
Through close reading and discussion, they examine how ideas are developed, how claims are supported, and how meaning emerges from context.
This work is less about arriving at quick conclusions and more about developing the habits of thought required for serious engagement with civic life.
