Dear Students, Families and Educators:

I hope that all of our students, families, and educators are enjoying the first week of a well-deserved winter break.

As you know, last week Cleveland and Cuyahoga County saw a dramatic 49% increase in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19. We saw a similar spike across the District as well.

Earlier this week I talked with the director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health about how to best prepare for a return to classes on January 4th. I also spoke with the interim state superintendent of education and am seeking guidance from the Ohio Department of Health as well. Based upon the guidance from these health professionals, it is my plan to update our school community about our return to classes at the beginning of next week.

For now, I am requesting that every parent and family have a plan in place in the event that your child’s classroom or school, or even the entire District, would need to implement our remote learning plan. This includes ensuring your child has a safe, supervised place to stay during school hours, that his or her tablet or laptop is available and fully charged, and that your child has a quiet place to log on and work with his or her teacher and classmates.

I am also asking that families and educators report all positive COVID cases to us as they occur by calling our COVID hotline at 216-838-9355 or emailing [email protected]. Accurate reporting of COVID cases among our students and staff is critical to helping us make quick, effective decisions about the potential need to quarantine a class or school.

Finally, I would urge those of you who are eligible to be vaccinated to take advantage of those opportunities as an additional way of protecting your health and the health of those around you.

Over the break I will continue to monitor the public health data in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County and seek expertise and guidance from our local and state health professionals, and I will plan to update our entire school community early next week.

Happy holidays to every member of the CMSD community. Enjoy the rest of your winter break!

Sincerely,

eric s. gordon
