The Northeast Ohio Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (NEOCAMS) was founded in 1984. Elections are held annually in the spring.

It serves as a local, autonomous chapter of the national American Meteorological Society. The chapter is made up of members who have an interest in the weather, no experience or specific education required, just your enthusiasm and participation. Officers consist of a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Five or six meetings are held each year. A winter and spring meeting will norm

Dear Chapter Members:

Over the past few years, attendance at our educational meetings has been steadily dropping. With one exception in 2012, our meetings have included fewer than ten people even though we have had excellent speakers with very interesting topics. I am sure you would agree that it isn’t appropriate to ask a speaker to devote several hours to prepare and deliver a presentation that only a few people show up to hear. The Board has made several efforts to increase awareness of the Chapter and improve attendance at our meetings, unfortunately they have not been successful.

In light of this situation, the Chapter’s Board has reluctantly decided to suspend the scheduling of any future meetings. We’re not disbanding the Chapter, rather we are simply placing it in a dormant status for the time being. If you have any ideas of how we can keep the Chapter alive and flourishing, please share them with a Board member.

Sincerely,

Mark A. Thornton
President

The effects of Sandy will extend as far west as the Ohio Valley. Heavy rain is expected, with the heaviest amounts occurring across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Heavy rains could lead to widespread flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas or areas located near rivers and streams. High winds are also expected, with gusts in excess of 65mph possible along the lakeshore. Tree and power line damage is expected. In preparation for the storm, be sure to secure loose objects around the yard to prevent them from being blown away and causing property damage. If you are in a flood prone area, you should have a plan ready in case your area floods. Please visit http://www.ready.gov/floods for flood safety tips and what you can do to prepare.
