🧭 A First for Walker Valley Navy JROTC!

This past weekend, our cadets traveled to Norris Dam State Park in Rocky Top, Tennessee, to compete in our program’s first-ever Orienteering competition against other Navy JROTC programs from Area 8!

Our cadets put their land navigation skills to the test, navigating through the terrain using only a map, compass, and their training.

A special congratulations to Jemma Johanneson, who finished as the 2nd female on the Yellow Course, and Ryan Shelley, who finished as the the 3rd male on the Yellow Course! 🥈🥉

We’re proud of all our cadets who stepped outside their comfort zones, took on a new challenge, and represented Walker Valley well.

⚓ A GREAT DAY WITH THE U.S. COAST GUARD! 🇺🇸

Yesterday, Walker Valley NJROTC had the opportunity to visit the USCGC Ouachita (WLR-65501) and spend the day learning from her crew.

The Ouachita is a 65-foot U.S. Coast Guard river buoy tender homeported right here in Chattanooga. Her primary mission is maintaining aids to navigation along hundreds of miles of the Tennessee River system—maintaining and servicing the buoys, lights, and other navigational markers that help keep our waterways safe and open for commercial and recreational traffic. The crew also stands ready to support other Coast Guard missions, including search and rescue.

Our cadets learned about the overall mission of the United States Coast Guard, its role within the Department of Homeland Security, and the unique responsibilities of the Ouachita and her crew.

And they didn’t just hear about it—they got some hands-on experience! Cadets went out on the water aboard the Coast Guard’s small boats, learned how to operate a high-pressure fire hose, donned firefighting gear, and received a great tour of the cutter and station.

It was an awesome experience and definitely a memorable day for our cadets!

A huge BRAVO ZULU to the crew of the USCGC Ouachita for being such outstanding hosts. More importantly, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge, experiences, and passion for service with our kids. We truly appreciate you pouring into our cadets and investing in them for the day!

⚔️ HOMEcoming Sword Arch ⚔️

This past Friday, Walker Valley NJROTC had the privilege of supporting our Homecoming festivities by providing a Sword Arch for the Homecoming Court during halftime of the football game.

Our cadets practiced hard, represented Mustang Company extremely well, and looked sharp! We appreciate their willingness to serve their school and fellow students by helping make an already special night even more memorable.

One of the things we value most in NJROTC is being an active part of the Walker Valley community. Whether we’re presenting the colors, supporting school events, or providing a sword arch on Homecoming night, we’re proud to create and contribute to the traditions that make Walker Valley special.

Congratulations to all of the students selected for the 2026 Homecoming Court! We were honored to be a small part of your special night.

🇺🇸 WE WILL NEVER FORGET — 9/11 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB 🇺🇸

Yesterday, Walker Valley NJROTC conducted our 2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in remembrance of the lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

Each cadet attempted to climb 2,071 stairs — the equivalent of 110 stories — in honor and remembrance of those who answered the call that morning and those who never made it home.

The day before the climb, our cadets spent class learning about and discussing the events of September 11th: the timeline of the attacks, the tremendous loss of life, the sacrifices of our first responders, and the lasting changes our nation has experienced in the 25 years since that day.

For many of our cadets, 9/11 is something they know only through history books, videos, and the stories of those who lived through it. Events like this give them an opportunity to better understand that history while honoring the courage, sacrifice, and service displayed on one of our nation’s darkest days.

And as you can see from these photos, these kids gave a phenomenal effort! It was a hot one, but they pushed themselves, encouraged one another, and kept climbing. We couldn’t be prouder of them.

We will always remember the lives lost.
We will always honor those who answered the call.
We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Walker Valley Navy JROTC is not a recruiting program. Our mission is to develop informed, responsible citizens with strong character and leadership skills. However, one of the core principles of that mission is Service to Country, and we will always celebrate our graduates who choose to answer that call.

This morning, Dakota Williams completed The Crucible at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island; the culminating event of Marine Corps Recruit Training.

After successfully completing this demanding 54-hour test of endurance, teamwork, and resilience, Dakota earned the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and, for the first time, was addressed as “Marine” by his Drill Instructors.

The title Marine is never given—it is earned. And it is a title he will carry with pride for the rest of his life.

We are honored to have played a small part in Dakota’s journey and are incredibly proud of the young man he has become.

Congratulations, Dakota!

Welcome aboard, sir!

Please join us in welcoming Lieutenant Commander J. White, USN (Ret.) to Walker Valley High School as our new Senior Naval Science Instructor.

We are excited to have LCDR White join the Walker Valley family and look forward to the experience, leadership, and mentorship he will bring to Mustang Company. His passion for developing young leaders makes him a great fit for our program, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds as we continue building something special together.

Here’s a message from LCDR White:

“I’m honored and excited for the opportunity to join Walker Valley High School as the Senior Naval Science Instructor. Throughout my Navy career, I had the privilege of leading and mentoring Sailors, and I look forward to bringing that same passion to investing in our cadets. My goal is to help build confidence, character, discipline, and leadership while challenging each student to reach their full potential. I’m grateful for the opportunity to become part of the Walker Valley family, and I’m eager to get to work alongside our cadets, staff, parents, and community as we continue building a program we can all be proud of.”

📣 We Need Your Help! 🇺🇸

Our Walker Valley High School NJROTC program has been incredibly blessed this summer with a large shipment of additional uniforms and equipment. While we’re excited to be able to outfit more cadets, we’ve quickly run into a new challenge—we simply don’t have enough proper storage to organize everything.

We’re looking for community members, local businesses, churches, civic organizations, or skilled volunteers who might be willing to help us build or sponsor storage shelving and uniform racks like those shown in these photos.

If you can help by:
🔹 Donating materials or funds
🔹 Providing woodworking or construction expertise
🔹 Volunteering a few hours of labor
🔹 Connecting us with someone who can help

…we would greatly appreciate it!

Our goal is to complete this project over the next two weeks so everything is organized and ready before our cadets return.

Every dollar, every board, and every hour of help directly supports our students and helps us provide them with a professional environment they can be proud of.

One of the core principles of Navy JROTC is Service to Country.

This Independence Day is especially meaningful for two of our recent graduates. Today marks their first Fourth of July wearing the cloth of our nation as they begin their military journeys.

🇺🇸 Dakota Williams is training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

⚓ Hunter Ibarra is training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes.

Walker Valley Navy JROTC is incredibly proud of both of you. Stay focused, stay motivated, work hard, and most importantly—stay hydrated!

Happy Independence Day from Walker Valley Navy JROTC!

Today we celebrate the birth of our nation and the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. We are grateful for the generations of Americans who have defended our freedoms and for those who continue to answer the call to serve.

As a citizenship development program, we strive to instill honor, courage, commitment, leadership, and a love of country in every cadet.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July!
