My follow instructor’s great write up of why KSW is different from other martial arts…
Q. What makes K*k Sool Won™ different from other martial arts like Karate or Tae Kwon Do?
A: This is the question we get the most, due to the widespread recognition of arts like Karate or Tae Kwon Do. K*k Sool Won™ draws its roots from the warrior traditions of Korea, incorporating techniques and forms from 31 native martial arts of the region.
Philosophy: What sets K*k Sool Won™ apart is its "hard-soft" system. Techniques are fluid and circular, simultaneously graceful and powerful. Practitioners are trained to use soft movements to disrupt an attacker's balance and then apply counter techniques targeting sensitive joints and pressure points. This is encapsulated in the guiding principles of K*k Sool: Yu-Won-Hwa (Soft/Yielding-Circular-Harmony/Blending). This balance not only provides effective defense but also cultivates relaxed power and overall health.
Curriculum: K*k Sool Won™ is comprehensive. It encompasses traditional Asian fighting techniques: from strikes and kicks to joint-locking and animal-inspired movements. With a repertoire of 3608 techniques, it caters to both novices and seasoned practitioners and is often seen as an advanced martial arts system.
Traditional Weapons Training: Karate uses farm tools as weapons. K*k Sool Won™ adds weapons of military and Buddhist origins due to its foundation in Korean tribal, Buddhist, and Royal Court martial arts. Weapons range from the long staff and straight sword to unique techniques like stone and knife throwing. At K*k Sool Won™ of Muncie, weapons training plays a crucial role, reflecting the art's rich heritage.
