Summer programming is officially in full swing at Near West Intergenerational School!
Our learners put their creativity, teamwork, and decorating skills to the test during a “Nailed It!”-style cake challenge. From colorful creations to imaginative designs, there was no shortage of fun, laughter, and a little friendly competition.
We don’t know about you, but we’d say they absolutely nailed it!
A great reminder that learning, creativity, and community continue all summer long at NWIS.

We are proud to share that The Intergenerational School has been recognized with the Northeast Ohio Stay in the Game District Engagement Award for our efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism over the past two years.
This recognition reflects the collective commitment of our staff, students, families, and community partners to making TIS a place where every child feels connected, supported, and excited to learn.
A special thank you to Aziz Ahmad, Chance DeWerth, Jennifer Orbash, Brianna McElrath, and Patricia Wilson for their outstanding leadership with Stay in the Game. From managing our Care Closet and attendance incentives to making phone calls, tracking data, and providing support behind the scenes, their dedication has made a meaningful difference in the lives of our students.
Congratulations to everyone who helps make TIS a place where people want to be. This award belongs to all of us!

Our Near West Refining students show that crafting is about far more than creating something with your hands. When students craft alongside older adults and community partners, they strengthen academic skills in authentic, meaningful ways.
Crafting across generations builds fine motor skills, problem-solving, sequencing, measurement, reading comprehension, listening, communication, and creativity. Students learn patience, perseverance, and how to follow multi-step directions while also hearing stories, perspectives, and life experiences that deepen learning far beyond a worksheet.
Research continues to show that hands-on learning improves memory, engagement, and critical thinking. Add intergenerational relationships to that experience, and students gain something even more powerful: connection, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging in their learning community.
These moments may look simple on the surface, but they are deeply connected to academic growth and lifelong learning.

Yesterday, our TIS 8th graders took the stage for Shark Tank: Final Projects Edition, and they absolutely delivered.
This year’s challenge asked students to create an idea that would positively impact our school and/or community. Students presented their concepts to a panel of special guest “Sharks,” showcasing creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and confidence throughout the experience.
A huge thank you to our staff for coming out to support and encourage our students. Your presence meant a lot to them. This tradition has really grown into something the students look forward to each year.
One of our guest Sharks was former TIS student, Brice Peake, which made the event even more special. When Brice attended TIS, both Mr. O’Hara and Ms. Bell were part of his school experience, so it was a great reunion and a full-circle moment for everyone involved.
Congratulations to this year’s Shark Tank winners, creators of Blissful Bouncer. The judges were genuinely impressed by all of the student presentations and loved seeing the creativity, teamwork, and passion our students brought to the experience.
So proud of our 8th graders. They did an amazing job.
