Why Have We Made Money So Hard to Talk About?

Ron Sellers made an interesting observation during our conversation on the Stewardship Leader Podcast:

Somehow, money has become a taboo subject.

We don't want to talk about it from the pulpit. We don't want to talk about it in our small groups. And we certainly don't want someone asking about our personal finances.

But Scripture doesn't treat money as an off-limits subject.

In fact, Jesus talked about money and possessions frequently because they reveal so much about our hearts, priorities, trust, and allegiance.

If the church avoids talking about money, we aren't protecting people from an uncomfortable subject. We may actually be avoiding an important part of their discipleship.

That's why stewardship needs to become a normal part of how we help people follow Jesus—not just something we discuss when it's time for a giving campaign.

Faithful stewardship is not a one-time decision. It is a journey.

It begins with freedom in Christ. Through formation, that freedom takes root. It bears fruit in generosity, grows into a life marked by trust and contentment, and eventually multiplies as people influence others.

As stewardship leaders, we get to walk with people through that process. We help people move from seeing money as something to control to seeing every resource as something entrusted by God.
