🌿 Preserving beautiful words!

Our 5th graders studied quotes from The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, thoughtfully considering their meaning and truth. Each student chose the words they found most beautiful and created a pressed-flower keepsake to remember them 🌸

Every year, CCA families are equipped with a comprehensive memory guide containing poetry, memory verses, art studies, Scripture readings, geography, and more! The purpose of this guide is to:
1) help children recognize what is good, beautiful, and true
2) keep classical learning simple and enjoyable for homeschoolers

We love hearing even the smallest children recite Robert Louis Stevenson and passages from Scripture as we practice at school!

🍫🪨 Can a chocolate bar become a rock?

Our 3rd–5th grade scientists used chocolate to model the rock cycle; discovering how the same material can change through processes like weathering, compaction, heat, pressure, melting, and cooling.

Try it at home!

1. 🍫 Sedimentary rock: Shave or break a chocolate bar into small pieces. Press the pieces together to model sediment being compacted and cemented into sedimentary rock.
2. 🔥 Metamorphic rock: Gently warm and press the chocolate pieces together. The heat and pressure change the chocolate without completely melting it; just like metamorphic rock changes under heat and pressure.
3. 🌋 Igneous rock: Melt the chocolate completely, then let it cool and harden. You’ve modeled how molten rock cools to form igneous rock!

As you experiment, ask: What changed? What stayed the same? What process caused the change?

That’s the beauty of science in the Grammar Stage: see it, touch it, do it, and then remember it! 🧠

A peek into CCA Science this week:

Lower school students are learning about Erosion and Caves. By applying the forces of their own breath and drops of water to frozen sandcastles, students recognized how wind and water can change rock formations through erosion.

Meanwhile, upper school Biology students enjoyed a lesson on microscopes and look forward to viewing living organisms with them soon!

📈 Economics in action! 🔗

Our high school students put supply and demand into practice with a Happy Chains Factory activity. By changing the available technology (taking away scissors or adding a stapler) students could experience firsthand how changes in resources and technology affect supply.

This is what we love about classical education: students don’t simply memorize economic principles. They experience them, ask questions, reason through the results, and connect ideas to the real world.
