What does it look like when a school district defines excellence by character rather than test scores? In Keene Independent School District, it looks like a community where "every child, every need, every day" isn't just a mission statement—it’s the daily architecture of the school.
Spanning just 4.2 square miles in Johnson County, Texas, Keene ISD has become a model for what happens when a district rejects the "forensic" use of high-stakes testing in favor of developing the "whole learner."
From their unique House System that ensures no student is invisible to their commitment to providing "Big School Opportunities in a Small School Environment," Keene is proving that small districts can have a massive impact. They aren't just teaching students; they are actively working to produce good humans.
