When a patient says “I’m not sure if I want to schedule yet”

You don’t need to plan their entire plan of care.

Your only job right now is to get them on the schedule for one appointment.

That’s it.

Step 1: Say This Next

“Totally understand. A few minutes ago, you told me you’ve been dealing with this [insert pain] for 6 months and it’s stopping you from [insert 3 things they said they can’t do].

This is just one appointment.

I can get you in tomorrow at 2:00 PM or 5:00 PM . Which one works best for you?

Step 2: Say This If They Don’t Schedule

“I get it, you want to talk to your husband. Here’s what we can do. What’s a good time between 9 and 12 tomorrow for me to call and follow up.”

Stop asking patients “When would you like to come in?”

There are 168 hours in a week. When you ask people what works for them, they look at all of them. Then they hit you with every excuse in the book.

Here’s what to do instead:
1) Always offer two time slots
2) Always offer the soonest spot first

Say this:

“Chelsea, I can get you in tomorrow, Wednesday, September 10th at 2:00 or 5:15. Which works best?”

Once they pick, repeat it back to them.

“OK, great. I have you scheduled for Wednesday, September 10th at 5:15”

You control the calendar. Not the patient.
