Preventative Search and Rescue isn’t just education — it’s prevention.

It reduces risk, strengthens community awareness, and helps ensure that adventures end safely. Every conversation matters. Every outreach moment counts — and prevention remains one of the most valuable services we provide in the SAR community.

Great opportunities for FREE mental health first aid certification training...

WCPL has partnered with Mental Health America of Northern Kentucky and Southwest Ohio to offer two free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings this summer — Adult MHFA on August 6 and Youth MHFA on August 20. This training equips you to recognize the signs of a mental health or substance use issue. It gives you the tools and confidence to take action and help.

Each class will be 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM, at Woodbourne Library, 6060 Far Hills Ave. Both are blended in-person courses, so there is a required 2-hour pre-work assignment that must be completed prior to the start of the live training.

A solid missing‑person interview can make or break the early hours of a search.

The Missing Person Questionnaire (MPQ) gives teams a clear, structured way to gather the right details fast — habits, routines, medical needs, last known direction, and the clues that help build an accurate subject profile.

Using the MPQ keeps interviews focused, reduces gaps, and ensures every responder is working from the same reliable information. Consistency saves time, and time can save lives.

Currently, Ohio lacks a unified framework to ensure that SAR (Search & Rescue) teams, particularly volunteer-based or unaffiliated groups, meet standards of training, proficiency, accountability, and interoperability. Sign the petition to urge the State of Ohio to protect the integrity of volunteer search and rescue by setting clear standards that serve both responders and the communities they are sworn to help.

Save the date! The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation invites families who have missing loved ones as well as law enforcement officers and the public to gather on May 16, 2026, to remember Ohio’s missing persons.

The annual ceremony marking Ohio Missing Persons Day is planned to raise awareness about missing-and unidentified-persons cases throughout the state.

Families with missing loved ones should plan to meet with law enforcement officers and/or analysts and bring police reports, photos of their loved ones, dental records/X-rays, and any additional information they wish to share.

One of the misconceptions about SAR is that it is no longer necessary with all of the technology currently available - GPS, smartphones, SAT phones, PLBs, etc. The reality is that people are going into the backcountry not only without any of these high-tech gadgets, but often without proper clothing or even water! According to this recent study, only 25 percent of the trail runners were considered adequately prepared, and only 16 percent of the day hikers. Worse, 88 percent of both the trail runners and day hikers rated themselves as “adequately prepared” for the wilderness. That is a significant gap.

A study of hundreds of hikers and runners reveals a dangerous gap between how safe we feel and the gear we actually carry. Here is what you really need to survive a day in the mountains.
