Home Health OT

Many occupational therapists provide treatment to different populations in home health care. Assessing and intervening with clients in their own homes is an excellent way to provide support in ADLs and IADLs. Therapists are able to address a wider range of interventions than they may be unable to in institutional settings. In addition, there is rarely a need for patients to simulate how they perform certain activities, as OTs can directly observe patients engaging in various occupations. Many theoretical foundations and approaches suggest doing therapy in the most normal, regular contexts possible for optimal results. While therapists must keep in mind that not every patient’s living situation is ideal for therapy, the home is largely considered a naturalistic setting. This allows many people to experience functional gains and practice carrying over therapeutic skills where they will most often be used.

Ethics, Cultural Humility, and Client-Centered Care in Occupational Therapy

The idea of cultural competence has recently taken a backseat to cultural humility. Cultural humility is an ongoing, reflective process of treating others with respect by identifying and addressing one’s own biases as well as power imbalances that can impact relationships. Cultural humility is becoming the norm because it is not something that can be gained from simply acquiring knowledge about specific cultures. This concept requires a greater commitment from providers, especially those dedicated to providing person-centered care. According to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, culture is one of several client factors that contribute to a person’s identity as well as their occupational performance. Therefore, occupational therapy services cannot be effective or tailored to the person unless a provider administers them using cultural humility.
